switch from serial to USB

hey guys,

I'm moving from windows to linux, and in doing so, my new pc doesnt have a serial port.

so I'm TRYING to use USB.

however even on my wondows PC, using the DELL supplied USB cable, I cant get connected.

it keeps telling me theres no modem or device setup.

yet I can hear the windows/USB "ding" when I plug it in. so its being seen

even pocket quicken (in windows) cant find it through the USB.

yet in my hotsync manager on my pocket PC there is COM3 listed.

is there some connection setup that I'm missing?
