Can't get by "ALIGN SCREEN" stage after hard reset

Hi - I'm giving my Dell Axim x5 to a friend. I've used it for about 3 years without issue, but I needed to clear the memory before giving it away as it's full of contacts, appointments, stuff sync'd from Microsoft Outlook etc.

So, I did a "hard reset" and cleared the memory, which then brought me to the Pocket PC setup screen. It asks me to tap the screen to start, and then I get an "ALIGN SCREEN" screen. The problem is, I can't get by it. It asks me to tap the target firmly and accurately at each location on the screen, which I have done. The target starts in the middle of the screen, and then goes top left, bottom left, bottom right, and top right.

I hit the target each time, then after I hit the last position in the top right, the whole cycle starts all over again. I've done it dozens of times, as firmly and as accurately as possible and it just keeps going back to the middle and starts all over. Something is obviously wrong.

Does anyone have any ideas so I can set this up and get it working for my friend ? Thanks so much !!

Try a soft reset and see if you can get beyond it. Otherwise I'd hard reset again!

Remove any storage cards as well.

Thanks to anyone who's read this and is thinking about posting, but (as I should have done from the start) I did a search for "align screen" in the archives and found numerous posts with instructions on how to disassemble the X5 and tape the worn connector strip inside. I did this and it now works perfectly. Thanks !
