Re-establish a lost partnership with my desktop

I have an 400 MHz Axim X5 and the main battery died. Even though the backup battery was allegedly at 50%, I lost my partnership with my desktop the next time I connected my Axim. How can I re-establish my old partnership so I don't have to migrate all my files, programs and settings to a new one?

Do I just need to rename my Device ID in my PDA settings to what my desktop calls it? If that's the case, how can I tell what name the desktop is using for the PDA? My desktop is running XP.
