help w/ symbol la4137 networker card
I am new to the forum and definitely need some help! I have an axim x5 (300mhz) running pocket pc2002. Recently I acquired a symbol la4137 wireless networker card from a friend but he had lost the software cd. I have read several of the threads here re: that card and it seems to be a decent choice for my x5 as long as the drivers installed are correct. I have visited the symbol site but I am very confused as to which of the 4 driver listings to download...they all indicate they are for pocket pc2003. So....my questions are these:
1. are the drivers backwards compatible with pocket pc2002?
2. which of the 4 listings should I use if any and if none of them, where can I find the correct ones?
3. Once I find the correct drivers, do I just download and run them on my home pc or do they need to be downloaded and run w/i my active synch folder to find their way to my x5?
As you can tell I have NO experience with wireless networking other than my home computer which uses a wireless portal to connect to the internet. Any and all help is very welcome!

Welcome,
It is important that you install the correct drivers. Ones for PPC 2003 will not work with PPC2002.
You have 2 choices, look again for the PPC2002 drivers ( driverguide .com is also a good resource) or upgrade your x5 to PPC2003. This can be either via ebay or search this forum and you will find links to free downloads, however a quick scan has shown many links no longer active
Once you have the downloads, the installation program will inform you how to install them.

drifter - thank you for your response...i'll continue to search for the correct drivers and/or for the 2003 upgrade. You're obviously familiar with both...is 2003 a better way to go or stick w/ 2002 if i can find the drivers?

Better is a matter of opinion. PPC2003 does have differnt features and being newer normally means improved but would you notice any major difference ????
Personally I would upgrade to 2003 if you can as symbol do not seem to offer 2002 drivers so its a choice between the cost of another card with 2002 drivers or buying via ebay and paying $1,00 for the upgrade...
For me the choice would be simple

Thanks again, Drifter...I appreciate your advice. I have looked for the upgrade on E-Bay w/o success but I'll keep searching for it. I'm sure I'll have more questions in the future since I'm such a "newbie" to all of this but thanks again!

drifter & pedah...thanks for the research! i have now upgraded to 2003, downloaded the latest mobile companion and drivers for my symbol LA4137 card and set up as much as i can figure out. it found my 2wire portal (i'm on sbcglobal's DSL) immediately and i've managed to establish a strong connection signal. HOWEVER...i must have missed something since when i go to internet explorer on my x5 and type in any address (i.e. www.google.com) it comes back with the message that the "page can't be found". HELP!!

You will need to check your 2Wire settings and make sure they match those for your Symbol card. Since the card is wireless b, you need to make sure you're braodcasting in b mode and not g only. You should also check the preamble/authentication settings for shared vs open and match that in the card software. You could also try changing your work/internet setting in the Axim connection settings.

Mahstah - you were right on the money...my 2-wire portal was set to "g". I changed that to "b" but still no go. Then I noticed when I double checked the wep encryption code entry area that you could choose the default (128 bit) or 40 bit. Due to my lack of knowledge I had been entering it in the 128 bit...I decided "what the heck" and switched to 40 bit, entered the code and BINGO! instant connection and problem solved!!! Thank all of you for all the help!!! You guys are GREAT!
