Problems installing ereader
Has anyone else had issues installing the ereader from ereader.com? I used to use this all the time on my old handspring (palm version), but the version for PPC2003 will not install. I get "Invalid Windows CE Setup
files" and "This application manager cannot install this application
due to an invalid setup file. Please try again" when running setup. I just bought a book, and it and others wont work with out the stupid ereader I dont know if it has anything to do with it, but I did upgrade to PPC2003 from 2002 using the ROM method..
Any ideas or help would be appreciated. The help on ereader.com so far just sends me copys of the install notes. NOT helpful.
Thanks,
John

Hi John, I tried to download the eReader app and could not, I thought I would test the setup and see if I could help, The only thing I could suggest is that the download is a .zip file and it may include more than one file and youare trying to install the wrong file for your OS. Not much help I know, if I can't download possibly your download is corrupted.

If the download is in zip or exe format it's most likely a PC installation file to be synced via AS. If it's a cab file then you should copy it to the X5 and run it from the PPC.

Thanks for the reply- the files will unzip using windows XP native unzip feature. All the directions I see say to run the setup program, which is where it goes wrong. So how do you run it from the X5 if I just copy the files over? PPC2003 is a lot like a 'real' os, but I cant see how you would 'run' a program that isnt all ready installed via the activesync. How would I do this?

Pedah, thanks for downloading it to see what I was talking about- thanks for your time! When you say you can not, what is preventing you? I think they might make you register with the website to get the free reader. I only paid $6 for the book, but grrrrrrrr. I really want to read it to- I have jury duty coming up!

waferman-
Did you read the readme that comes with the program? It says run the msi.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
README file for eReader v. 2.6.5 for Windows Mobile Edition 2003/Windows Mobile Edition 2003 SE/Windows Mobile Edition 2005
***NOTE FOR PRO USERS***
If you have previously purchased eReader Pro, don't worry
you have a registration number available in your account. Just
log into your account and look on your account page. Thanks!
Installing the eReader
======================================
Follow these procedures for installing eReader:
1. Connect your PocketPC or Smartphone device to your host computer.
(Note: We assume that you have already set up communications
between your host computer and your mobile device.)
2. Turn on your PocketPC or Smartphone device.
3. Run eReader.msi on the host computer. Follow the instructions on
the screen. NOTE: It is recommended to remove any previous version of the
eReader software installed on your PC using the Uninstall option of
that version's installer before proceeding with an upgrade.
4. To run the eReader software, launch it from the shortcut
'Start\Programs\eReader'. The operation of the PocketPC version
of the eReader is the same as the Palm handhelds version.
Installing the books
======================================
Follow these procedures for installing books:
1. Connect your PocketPC or Smartphone device to your host computer.
(Note: We assume that you have already set up communications
between your host computer and your mobile device.)
2. Turn on your PocketPC or Smartphone device.
3. Run BookInstaller.exe on the host computer.
4. Select one of the books from the list presented and click on the 'Ok'
button. If there are no books listed, or the book you want is not
listed, use the 'Browse...' button to locate a directory with books.
5. You will be prompted to unlock your new book on the device when
you open it from the Book\Open menu item.

Thanks, not only do I not intrinsically know what an 'msi' type file is, there isnt anything that says msi outwardly that I can click on. So I used the search function and it looks like the two main installation files, 'setup' and the other .exe looking file, are 'msi' files. Clicking on them is where my error is. I have followed the Notes to the 't', but nothing will install for me.

An msi file would be found searching the folder for *.msi (MS installer type). An exe is not an msi, most people can't tell the difference because Windows defaults to not showing file extensions. That option is changeable in your folder options on the computer.

HI John, I downloaded the ereader pack, you were right I had to register but they have free books too, right price for me LOL. when you double click on the zip file it opens and then you can see a single file called ereader pro for PPC, open that and you will see two files and a read me file
ereader.jpg
you want the file on the right, open that and here's what you'll see
ereader001.jpg
the highlighted file in the above shot is the .msi file, double click on that to start the install process, follow the prompts through the installer and be ready to attend to the axim near the end of the install process.
Alternatively you see the two files that look like filing cabinets, the one on the lleft is for wm2003, the right is wm5, you can copy the appropriate file to axim, then navigate to it on axim and click on .cab file and it will start the install process on the axim. HTH

Thanks Pete! I really appreciate your trouble! I pretty much did what you did; the file wont install, but gives the error message I indicated in my post. I wonder if it could be a drawback of using the ROM to upgrade to PPC2003? In any case, I will copy over the cab files manually to see if that works. BTW, why would my computer not display the files as .cab files? They are listed as .000 and .001 instead of .cab...grrrr Can you tell me the file size of the wm2003 .cab file? There is a larger and smaller.
Thanks again, man!
Cheers,
John
