SD Card size maximum

Does the X5 have a problem with SD cards larger than 1GB. I have heard some older devices don't like 2+ GB SD cards.

Hi,

yes, it depends on what operating system you have on your X5. PPC2002 (Rom's A00-A04) will only handle a max of 1GB, ROM A05 ( PPC2003) will happily handle 2GB .

Note,

I have tested 2 4GB SD cards, both an unbranded low speed and a Sandisk ultra 2. Both lock up the x5..

2Gb seems to be the limit for both SD and CF cards in the X5

Thanks much. I plan on getting seeing if I can get it on 2003 tomorrow.

Other than SD support, what other functionality or fixes came with 2003?

A00-A04 also supported SD cards, just at a lower capacity.

Please also note that i have ammended my original post as I have now tested 4GB cards and these are not useable, Assume 2GB , either SD or CF is the limit to be safe.

The main difference between PPC and PPC2003 is that the later, being a total rewitre is a much more stable operating system on the X5. It has better card handling facilities, better WiFi and communications, but basically a lot of small tweaks that make it easier.

Many people stay with A04 (which is the last system that can be downloaded from Dell) and are quite happy providing the do not use the internet or 2GB cards.

If you do upgrade ( or not) . I do strongly advise you download and install the CF timing upgrade as this is essential for CF cards above 256MB

Hi Drifter,

I upgraded my axim x5 to ppc2003 and it now recognize the 2G card. Ichecked the memory on the SD and it said 1.8G. However, whenever i try to access the file beyond the 1G zone it doesn't seem to see the file. Do you know what may have caused this?

What exactly do you mean ??. Are you having problems loading files larger than 1GB ??.

Past experience . For some reason the X5 and others seem to go to sleep and slow down loading when their are large files involved. I've always found that accessing the foilder on the SD card that is accepting the file via the PC file explorer, kicks the wholething back into life.

Also, although not really helpful, some brands of cards do seem prone to problems than others

I own a transcend 2g, so I copied about 10 110+M media avi files on to the disc. I have trouble opening the #9 file since this is the file that just surpass the 1G limit. The file would open up and play for about a min or so then hang with a file corruption error message. For the 10th file it just simple said file is not found.

BTW, all these files works fine on the card reader.
