Updating from PPC 2002 to WM 2003 using Dell Upgrade CD - Version Problems
Hello folks,
I would like to update my Axim X5 Advanced from PPC 2002 to WM 2003 using the upgrade CD from Dell.
However I could only find the English Upgrade CD and upon buying it realised that my Axim does not accept it because my current PPC 2002 is German.
Does anyone have the German Upgrade CD to WM 2003, or does anyone know where I could find it?
I called Dell Germany but they don't sell that CD anymore.
If I can't find it - is there a way to change the language of my Axim to English and then do the update using the upgrade CD I bought?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Upgrading to an english PPC2003 is probably easier than finding a german copy.
You need to reflash the ROM using the "hack" method.
You need a CF card with a minimum of 32 MB free space. Clear the CF card and install into the x5. Next on your CD, locate the upgrade files PK_NK_(&)_07170300EN and copy the correct one to your CF card Note (&) = H for the 400Mhz unit and L for the 300 MHZ.
Make sure the battery is fully charged and the CF inserted in your Axim.
Press and hold Power, scroll in, contacts and reset. Release reset and power and hold the other two for apprx 20 seconds then release. The machine will then load the correct english ROM.
Note you may have to try the button combination a few times before it works.
Good luck.

Thank you!
Thanks a lot for the reply.
Is P25_NK_H_07170300EN.img the right file?
Would you first of all advice me to change from PPC 2002 to WM 2003. I heard some ppl had performance problems after changing to WM 2003, due to a bug of some kind - is there a fix for that in case I encounter the same problem?
Is there a risk involved in the procedure you described? If there is one - would you advise me to take it, i.e. is it worth it?
Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions - I really appreciate it.

Yes the file you mention is correct for the Axim x5 400Mhz.
I think you may be confusing two issues. The bug you mention is when you change to WM5 ( not available on the X5).
For the X5 you have either PPC2002 or PPC2003 ( strictly speaking PPC2003=WM3, but ignore that).
Providing you make sure the axim is plugged in on mains and the battery fully charged, their is very little risk of anything going wrong.
Is it worth the upgrade ???. Depends on how you are using your X5. Personally I would upgrade as a matter of routine.

Thanks!
Many thanks for the insights! I'll try to get an CF card then, since I unfortunately only have an SD card.

buttons on X5 during reload rom
Hello
For first, nice site
For second, I have a problem with updating my X5. It's not all dead, but i cannot use it any more after uploading new eprom from dell. If I put it to the cradle I can see that there is trying to make a connection but it fails with - cannot find .exe file and it hungs. So I tried the Power, scroll in, contacts and reset. But no effects. It starts when I release reset and power, I can see dell sign, but after it is like dark screen and doens't do anything. I can see that ther is back light but not copleting the boot sequence. As I understood there shall be and boot sequence to boot from CF card (used 64 and 256 MB) but no effect.
I hope I'm pressing the right buttons Scroll must be pressed in (or up or down ?) and contacts is the second button from left if I look at it. Reset and Power button are not problem ...
Thank you
Rob

Hi Bor121, welcome to aximusers.com.
You are correct with the buttons to use, but you need to press the scroll inwards not up or down.
I think you cannot be pressing the buttons correctly. I have an x5 infront of me now ands when I press all 4 torther and then release power and reset, it does not start... This only happens after I release the remaining two buttons. If is starts after release of the first 2, then you have not pressed the buttons correctly
If their is a CF card in situ with a good ROM file on it, this will be loaded, otherwise the X5 will just reload the ROM already in its memory.
Try again... IT DOES WORK.
