    Unhappy Axim X5 GPS problem

I have an Axim X5 400Mhz Pda and was using my wired GPS reciever with Tom Tom absolutally fine for 4 months. One day tom tom would not work and said gps unavailable.. the receiver light was one but dim so I replaced the charger wire.. no help.
I then decided to get another receiver and the light on that flashes indicating GPS signal is fine but the software still said GPS unavailable. Itried re-installing everything but still that was no help. If anyone can help that would be very appreciated!!

    Welcome to aximusers.com

Can I ask a few questions about the set up you have as I know TT5 and wired GPS's work well.

    1) What ROM version do you have.
    2) What was the make of your original and now replacement GPS receiver
    3) Is it plugged in via a y cable or a car holder?. If so what make
    4) What version of TomTom are you using
    5) Make of car ( can make a difference as some have glass that can cause problems)
    6) In tomtom, what configuration do you have for the GPS receiver ie type, comm port.

The above questions will help me to assist. I suspect however that perhaps you changed make of GPS receiver, in which case you need to change the type used in TomTom GPS config, but to what depends on your version of TT

Well here are your answers (well most of them)

1)ROM version no idea - sorry
    2)Original was rikaline 6010 and is now G-mouse BR-355
3)Plugged via Y cable through cigarrete lighter
    4)Tom Tom 3
    5)Nissan Almera 1998 Hatchback
6)Receiver is set to serial com 1.

It was all working fine before and one day just stoped.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Some of the questions may have sounded strange, but the answers are very useful.

For example, some cars have heat reflecting windscreens which also reduce the signal for GPS. Typically a good signal at sometimes of the years becomes no signal at others.

I suspect the problems is not down to this factor, but however you should check by placing the receiver on the roof of the car and see if the signal is received.

TT3 has a simpler GPS interface that later versions, so I am assuming that in your tests you are using the GPS option available via the programs option on the today screen.

Have you installed a driver for the new GPS receiver in TT3 ? Their are a few generic drivers, but when ever possible you should install the driver that came with the new GPS receiver??. IF all else fails then use the NMEA option and BAUD rate 4800

To make sure you install the correct driver, you need to identify what version of operating software you have on the axim.

From the today screen, select, settings, then system then System information. Look for the ROM version.

If it is ROM A00-A04 then you need a driver for PPC(or CE) 2002. If it is ROM A05 then you need the driver for PPC ( or CE) 2003.

incidentially, if your ROM is version A00 to A03 , you should upgrade to A04 via dell.com.

When you are more experienced, you may wish to consider upgrading to A05, but that is more complex.

Let us know how you get on
