Connecting to the Internet
Hi.
I have a Dell Axim X5. It's a nice Pocket PC.
I am having a few troubles though.
I need help connecting online to the Internet. I'm not sure if some sort of hardware is installed on the Pocket PC to allow me to connect to the Internet, but how would I find out? In addition, if there some sort of other device I need to purchase to enable me to connect online to the Internet?
If someone can help, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

If your PPC comes w/ ActiveSync, you should be able to connect to the Internet via your local area network (through your desktop/laptop). This will be a hardwire connection using a Serial cable or an USB cable.
For wireless Internet Connection:
1. If your PPC has a Type II CF expansion slot, you can use a wireless (WiFi) interface card. The WiFi interface card that you choose will depend on the OS on your PPC. For older OS, you may have to use "Wireless B" type card. Check your manual.
2. You also need a router. If your WiFi interface card support Wireless B-mode, get a router that support "Mixed mode", i.e. B & G mode.
Some Internet Service Provider offer phone line connection that use DSL modem with built-in wireless router. In that case, a router is not necessary.
The wireless Internet connection can be described diagramatically as follow:
PPC + WiFi card -> Router -> Internet
Please post if further clarification is required.
EDIT
To find out whether you've built in WiFi, check your System Information using Settings > System, & look for "wireless". Try emailing HP.

Check your other post. Call Dell to find out whether you've a built-in wireless card.
You can also go to
Start > Settings > System > System Information. If you've built-in wireless, you will see "Wireless attended" or something similar.
We'll go from there.

Don't bother calling Dell.
The X5 does not have built in WiFi capabilities. ( nor does the HP540 in your other post.)
Unless you have already got one, you need to buy either a CF of SD WiFi card first. After that you will need to make sure that you are in a wifi hotspot or have a wifi router at home.

Hi.
Thanks for the help, it's appreciated!
Alright, both do not have the things needed to go online.
Where can I get these sort of cards? Can someone link me so I can see it?

Thanks!
I apologize creating two threads for the two Pocket PCs I have, but I thought since the other forum was for Dell Axim X5, I shouldn't post about the other Pocket PC within the same forum.
Though, this means a lot to me!
As I said in the other thread, can someone link me to the products I need to purchase? I'm looking for this thing to be wireless.

I'm glad you responded. Initially I was wondering why would someone own 2 pretty old PPCs. I knew what they are ... their specs. I thought you were joking.
Back to serious business. You can check out the Symbol LA-4137 wireless card. Here is the site:
http://www.symbol.com/products/wireless/la4137.html
It should work on both your PPCs.
We'll stay on this thread, easier to keep track.

Thanks for the help.
I'll check out the link.
Ah, right. To answer the question, I have both these Pocket PCs because dad works for a business called General Elections (GE) as a lot of people know. The business gave him several Pocket PC which he never used. He has a new Dell Axim, I think X51 now, not sure, but he gave some old ones to me. I can tell the Dell Axim X5 is quite nice compared to the HP Jordana 540. Though, I would like to learn about both, just because I have both.
I mean, having a Pocket PC rather than none at all is better, right? Haha.
Well, I do love this help, it's quite nice! It means a lot. So once again, thanks.
Edit: If possible, is there a chance I can find this product or a similiar one in a local store so I can purchase it? Such as CompUSA or Best Buy? A link perhaps so I can get all the information down. Thanks!
