X5 GPS connect
I have just gotten a X5 for the wife, and after updating it to WM 2003 A05 and installing the iGuidance 2.0 i find that i have no idea how to add the GPS reciever. Its a adapter that looks to be a PS2 and it comes with a cable to hook to the car DC power and the X5, but in software what do i have to setup or configure to make it work?

Did you install the driver software for the GPS receiver on the Axim? It will include a configuration program to make the receiver a device your iGuidance can use.

No driver, i don't even know what brand GPS it is. I worked with a BT GPS last time and didn't need any driver. Is this "serial" for lack of a better term setup a lot different?

If you used a BT GPS on the X5, you must have loaded a driver for that card since it's not built in. The X5 has no BT software included by default. Wired or wireless, it uses a serial port that needs to be created for the GPS software to properly recognize the data being transmitted. CR/LF
Your first step is to find software for the wired GPS receiver you are using. Find its make and model then visit their support site. If you can't find the info, ask the person/entity you purchased it from.

Can you post:
1. A picture of your adapter in jpg format.
2. Another picture zoom in on the ID on text that describes it, i.e. model or S/N.
Hopefully someone can recognize it.

Theres really nothing to show its about 3in x 3in with a bar code on the back, i opened it up and there was no info. Several sites said there was no driver needed, just set the com to 1 and the baud to 4800... So i'm trying that right now...

Here's the installation & troubleshooting guide for iGuidance
It will walk you through setting up ...
You might want to take a peek at COM1, make sure you see "Serial Cable on COM1" and not strange characters.
Post if you need assistance.

i don't see anything in the WM 2003 A05 that there is anyway to set up the "serial" port. I do know there is a similar section in WM 2005. I'm throwing my hands up at this point, i think the gps must be bad or something.

If Iguidance works like other GPS programs, then their will be an option in setup that allows for GPS configuration and also possibly a simple signal reporting option ( sorry I am a TomTom user so I have to guess a little on IGuidance).
Take a look at the installed program on your x5 and under setup, preferences or something similar. This should have an option to allow you to select the COMM port and also Baud rate. If the make of your receiver is not listed ( or known), then you should try the NMEA or SiRF option.
Again working from my own setup, their are a few things to check before assuming the receiver is faulty ( could just as easily be the cable).
1) When plugged in to 12v, does the PDA charge ie is the centre top light on
2) Most GPS mice have an LED that flashes when it receives power and flashes differently when it is receiving a GPS signal and again when "locked on". Obviously without knowing your receiver, I cannot comment for certain, but this should be something to check.
