I'm a Palm user who is currently looking to make the switch to a PocketPC device. Over the past few weeks I've done some research on the various devices and I think I've decided to purchase an Axim X5 (and a Socket Com. bluetooth CF card).

Unfortunately, I can't decide which model X5 I want to go with...

Of the differences I can see (CPU speed, cradle, RAM/ROM) the only one that is really important to me is the CPU speed. All of the other items (except ROM, I suppose) can be upgraded at a later time, but the CPU speed is something that I would be stuck with until I get a new unit.

Having no experience in the PocketPC world, though, I'm not sure how much difference there is between the speed of the two models (300 Mhz vs. 400 Mhz). Can anyone provide me with some insight, or real world examples, of the speed differences?

Am I overlooking any other important differences?

At this point, I think I will mostly be using my X5 for e-mail, web browsing (via bluetooth to my T68i), editing various small spreadsheets and word files, and listening to MP3s.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Here is my .02 worth. A friend and I bought them at the same time, unknown to each other at the time. I got the 400 and she got the 300. After we compared notes, she had to pay for the cradle and I think that made the difference only $35.00 (this was a couple of weeks ago and I can't remember exactly).

She has said that she now wishes she had sprung for the extra and gotten the 400. The only noticeable difference is speed and memory, which is so close you can't really see a difference anyway. Everything runs the same on both of them.

Hope this helps.

Just ordered the 400mhz version. With the rebate & discount offered ($90) total made the price difference a moot point for me. Expecting it in about three weeks.

I am sure that either of them are fine products. Spring for the 400MHz version if you can.

I'm Canadian and, unfortunately, Dell Canada doesn't honor the same discounts and rebates as they have on the Dell US web site. In fact, even after the currency conversion, the Dell US pricing is CHEAPER than the Dell Canada pricing. This is especially true when you factor in the discounts that you can get through the US.

It's a little crazy. I've had several arguments with Dell Sales Reps over this.

Right now, the 300 Mhz model is $379 CAD and the 400 Mhz model is $549 (not including shipping, of course). This is still a lot cheaper than some of the other brands on the market, but the 400 Mhz model seems to get a little pricey, at over $500.00.

I can buy a new Dell PC for less than that.

Although desktop PCs are SOMETIMES cheaper, the pure size and coolness factor is what we pay for with these Pocket PCs.

I am in Canada and I just purchased my Axim5 from the www.theshoppingchannel.com. I purchased it for $649 Cdn.

The prices included:
Axim5 (400Mhz)
Leather Carrying Case
Extra Stylus Pen
Protective Cover
and 2 years warranty.

And the best part was that I was able to pay this in 4 easy monthly payments with no interest.

That's not a bad deal, is it? About $418 U.S.

I agree with them about the 400mhz instead of 300mhz. I'm guessing that since the 400mhz Axim has 48mb of ROM and the lower model has 32mb, when the next OS comes out, around Spring, you will be able to upgrade since it has 48mb, and the ones with 32mb will probably not be able to install all of the features. Just like Compaq had to do with the 36XX iPAQ's, but leaveing out WMP and some others. I don't know for sure if thats true about the next OS, but just my guess.

Before the end of the year Dell Canada had the 300's for $379 less $80 instant rebate and $80 mail in =$219Cdn.
The 400 had $50 instant rebate and $80 mail in.
I picked up two 300's for $438 Cdn + the usual taxes, shipping

With a 128SD card and most applications installed on SD I have never had a memory problem also from what others have posted the 400 is only 8% faster.
If you want the cradle instead of the cable it is $20US or $29 Cdn extra.
