You have 3 types of memory in a PDA.
ROM - Read only memory.... This is a hard coded memory that stores all the operating system files and programs. It need no power to retain the memory as it is hard coded. In PC terms , the closest is CMOS. The only way to clear the ROM is to essentially short circuit it.
RAM - Random access memory, this is more like the working meory in a PC. This needs power to retain the programs . It is not like a hard disk which stores data even when power is lost. Think of it like a PC, start Word and put the PC in sleep mode, Word will be kept in memory until the power is switched off.
This is why a PDA is never fully switched off but is in a sleep mode.
FLASH (Compact or Secure) - This is your hard disk. It needs power to have data put their or to be retrieved, but once it is their, it stays there.
I hope this clarifies
