Hello all,
I need to change the language installed on an x5.

I have an Axim X5 which arrived to me with MS PPC V3.0 German language installed on it. It was a freebie anyway so this was ok. I also have a DELL copy of what seems to be MS PPC 2003 premium w/outlook 2002 in english.

My English Dell cd is p/n K1450. it is a blue pocket pc 2003 companion cd and it says it has outlook 2002 and Microsoft Activesync 3.7 on it, as well as other programs like adobe reader etc
The cd is in a sleeve which has a large COA (with keycode) on it as well as the smaller COA for my axim.
I browse the CD and there is nothing that says install PPC.
as it was second hand maybe I am missing a cd, does anyone know??

Can I remove the german language off the axim and install a complete new english version?

And if so, can I do it with the cd I have.

If not can I still do it with a brand new purchase of MS PPC

If you can help me that will be great as i want one of these for my car for navigation.
Thanks & regards
Dave

Welcome to Axim users, We hope you enjoy your new Axim .

It is possible to change the language. I have done this myself, when I changed from German to English, but you cannot do this with the standard CD supplied with the axim.

You need to find an axim A05 upgrade CD ( not available from Dell). Best look on Ebay or similar.

This CD will contain two files, starting with P ( approx 64MB). The diufference is the file containing the letter H is for the 400Mhz x5 and L is for the 300Mhz.

When you have the CD, you need to copy the approprite file to a 64 MB or bigger CF card in your axim.

Make sure your axim is plugged into the mains adapter and then push and hold, Power, contacts, hold in the scroll button and at the same time press and hold reset. Hold these 4 buttons together for 10 seconds and release the reset and power. Hold the scrol and contact for 15 seconds and then release. The axim will then read the CF card and will update the ROM from the CF card. If this ROM is english, then your Axim will also be in english.

NOTE. It may take a few attempts to get the combination of buttons correct

Also you unhderstand that even if the OS in in German, you can run navigation programs in any language you want

Davey399.

You only need a 64MB CF card for this hack to work.

Hi to everyone! Im a brand new pocket PC user! Ive just received an Axim X5 Adv!

First thing I tried to do was tu update it. It came with MS PPC 2003 (in Spanish) and ROM A01 (H-07190300SP)

I wanted to know if I should update to ROM A05 (in English) 'cos I think that the latest Spanish version is A01 (actually I dont know where to look for more up-to-date versions)

I have the A05 update but it wont let me apply it because it is in English and my system in Spanish, so I was thinking I could use the hack explained above.... but I dont have any CF cards, so I was wondering if it worked with a SD card aswell...

anyone can help me?

Thank u

Welcome to Axim users.

You are very lucky to receive an X5 free, it is a great machine.

The hack will only work with CF cards, SD will not succeed, but you only need a 64MB CF card to make the language change/hack and these you can get very cheap either new or second hand.

Believe me, it is worth it !!!!

I have tried flashing my device with an A05 rom I got over Internet... It was exactly 25.5 MB big which, doesnt match wit either Lucidix's 32MB file nor Drifter's 64MB file (I should have checked it BEFORE flashing my device ¬_¬)

The problem is that every time I tried flashing my x5 it says "Write Image incorrect" and the device tries to launch the OS...but it doesnt go further than the DELL in a blue circle screen...

I'd like to try with othe ROMS to fix mi ppc 'cos right now Im kinda fearing I've might have broken mine permanently...

any help? please

I did not tell you the file was 64MB, only that you should use a 64MB CF card.

The file you need is exactly 26,113KB large

Their are two files available and you need to make sure you get the correct one for your Axim.

P25_NK_H_07170300EN is the file for the 400Mhz x5 and
P25_NK_L_07170300EN is the file for the 300Mhz x5

Your best bet now is to look on Ebay to find a CD copy. The problem with downloading a copy could be either that you do not know how it was generated or if it was hacked.

If you are getting a error message that the write image is incorrect, it sounds as if the flash is not working. However as the OS is rewriting itself, it could take 1-2 minutes to get past the blue screen ( perhaps a soft reset could help).

If your x5 is truely broken, then I may be able to help you as I am selling an X5 Motherboard- 100% working with English OS.

I am looking for Euro 35 plus postage which is much cheaper than sending off your X5 for a repair or trowing it away. If you are interested, send me a private email.
