Got a like-new X5 from a good friend, as she no longer used it (had done a lot of "free" tech work for her). I'd like to start really using this PDA, but my misfortunes in Sync'ing have been depressing.. here's a quick time line (without the times).. Skip down to #Today# if you don't like witty reflection over misfortune.

Got my X5... insert Joyous exclamation..
- no Sync cradle, it's MIA.. np, I'll go wireless!

Ebayed new DLink DCF-650W (and reaffirmed to my wife the reasoning behind my purchase of a wireless router )
-2 weeks later it arrives... >_<
-Plug it in.. nadda.. oh my, must sync up the DLink drivers? that wasn't in the ad! /sigh

Ebayed New Insten retractable Hotsync/Charging cable
- Later that night, notice friends laptop has IR port, which I learn she'd been sync'ing from... another $10 wasted >_<
-Next day, Sync wireless Drivers from her laptop. Immediately got online via her Wireless router. Insert joyous exclamation..
-Encrypted her open wireless network
-Get home, start working on installing Activesync so i can sync wirelessly from my computer.. Oh my.. Must do a WIRED sync first? *bangs head on wall*
-waiting another 2 weeks for ebayed cable now.. but at least this will be final.

Recieved Retractable Hotsync Cable..
-Software installed, program asking for the PDA.. plug it up, BAm... nothing.
-4 hours and 3 computers later, still nothing. Just sits there. Almost like the cable is a fake.. (though it does charge).

Copied friends entire Activesync installation and shoved it into my PC, in hopes it would think it had been sync'd and allow me to use whatever wireless sync option that was available...
-No dice. Must be registry entries involved with establishing PDA's into activesync.. forgot to even check for those

######
#Today#
######

So this is where I am. A shiny Axim X5(working), A Wireless CF NIC(working), and a retractable hotsync cable(not working)... still unable to sync by wire.. I'm hoping someone out there knows Activesync well enough to tell me how to force it past that annoying first sync dialogue that pops up no matter what portion of the program you run.. or how to trick it into letting me just wirelessly sync for the first time.. or manually imprint my X5 via registry/file altering/hex editing/whatever. All I want to do is wirelessly sync.. I don't want to waste any more money. There MUST be a solution!

Help?

I've experienced this a few times on an IPAQ and found it to be a bad connection.

If activesync is installed correctly and all is working OK, the PC should report the presence of the Axim almost imediately and you should hear pings from both the PDA and the PC.

Belt and bracers, job, but Microsoft do tell you that Activesync should be installed before the first connection of the PDA , otherwize connection problems can occur.

? Test the cable.
Do you know someone with a PC that has active sync runnimg correctly ?. If so try plugging your axim/cable into their PC, it should register.

? If above test OK, then de install Activesync and also power down the PDA until internal batteries are flat and all data is lost ( remove back up and main batteries). Re install Activesync and also restart the PDA.

Hopefully you should see it register.

Shock,

You have to create a partership with your desktop first

When this is done, go to activesync on your PC. Connect your axim to sync.
When you have a connection click on tools/options
Check off enable synchronization with a server and click configure
Click on connection and type in the IP address of your PC with your user name and password

Disconnect your Axim
On the Axim go to activesync
Tap tools/options
go to the Server tab
Type in the IP address of your PC

It should work now.

If it doesn't, turn off your firewall.

oops, I misread the post.

here are some suggestions:

1. reinstall activesync using the latest version
2. Try switching to another usb port (connect to the usb first then to the axim)

I'm 95% sure my new cable is bad.. 3 fresh installs of Activesync on 3 separate computers (all different hardware) kinda rules out just about everything but the cable, and the PDA itself.

What I really want, is directions on manually creating the partnership. What files need to be altered.. or what registry entries need to be made, in order to convince my desktop that a partnership has already been established. My next trip to the original owners place is going to include the cable/pda for a quick test, and me digging through her registry for what I hope to be the info I need... but that may be weeks or more away. I was hoping that someone might already know what's involved.

If any of you are comfortable using RegEdit... do me a great favor and do a search for strings with relevant info.. such as searching for "Activesync", or "Axim". If we can match up data strings with something, like your PDA's serial number, or even Device ID (search that too), perhaps I can fake the partnership and avoid blowing cash on another cable (that I'll only use once).

Whoever manages to help me get this partnership established gets a gmail invite Gmail info

At this point, I'd be giving up and buying a USB to IrDA adapter on eBay and doing the first sync via IR. I paid less than $8 (including shipping) to get my last one. Personally, I'm much more suspicious of your Axim than the cradle and cable.

well, for 1 use, and after all my troubles thus far, I'd rather try the hard/cheap route first.. at least failing this way will give some reasoning for purchase. The cable I purchased is a retractable model, and IMO is kinda cheap in construction. That's $10 wasted already.. not optimistic about going for $20 so quickly. (before it's all over, I might as well have bought a new unit)

I finally managed to get into my friends registry, exporting anything relevant.. reading through I've identified one more fileset I need (application data in windows profile directories) before I can try to force the partnership. I just know it's possible.. I simply have to find that 1 hook that generates the pop-up demanding a first sync.. hope it's not elsewhere

Once I get that far, hopefully I'll be able to get the wireless sync running.

Still interested in comments/suggestions from anyone who's dug this deep into the mechanics of activesync.. maybe someone else will benefit from my headaches down the road.

some problem here... same retractable non-working cable (from eforcity, insten brand).

Have you had any luck?
