Size of acceptable .txt files

I came to the Pocket PC (Axim) from Palm (Handera 330). On my HE, I am able to load in text files in excess of 9meg, but when I try to do the same on the Axim, I always get an error. I think that the error is because the file is too big. What is the maximum size .txt file, or even Pocket Word converted from Microsoft Word, that can be loaded into the Axim? :huh:

For information, the .txt files are rip files containing list of amateur radio operators in each of the ten districts, therefore, there are ten files. I know how fast the Handera is able to search from beginning to end, and wanted to compare its speed with the Axim. I was hopping to keep the files on the Axim, assuming that it was able to search faster, but none of the files can be loaded with an error showing up. I appreciate any help. -Frank :alien:

What does the error say? What application are you using? By 'load in' do you mean 'copy to the Axim' or 'open in an application'? How much free memory do you have left? (9Mb might have pushed you over the edge, the app. might need double that to work properly).

Microsoft's text applications are particulary bad at handling huge text files, and always have been. Notepad being a case-in-point.

The error just says that there is an error opening the file. I am trying to open it in Pocket Word.

I did some experimenting with files of different sizes, and found that I am able to open a file that was about 1.6Meg. Larger files don't open, just give an error opening file. The largest file that I am trying to open is over 12Meg, and it opens fine in Palm OS. I know that Palm OS pages in portions of large files, the amount determined by the free RAM. Too bad that Pocket Word does no do this.

I forgot to mention that I have a little over 31 Meg of RAM available, as I just started loading things into RAM, previously, I have loaded as much as possible on an SD.

At this rate, it seems that the Palm OS is the more powerful of the two operating systems, at least for what I do. Thanx, -Frank

Have you tried some other text-handling app?

I'm a new user so can't recommend anything I know of, but there must be apps out there that load partial files as a Palm does. Anyone?
