x5 ActiveSync backup problem "insufficient storage memory"

Hi all. Sadly I dropped my original trusty X5, and cracked the screen. Was able to acquire a new unit (thank you,eBay!) for less than screen replacement would have cost and restore worked so I am back up and running. BUT after a couple of successful incremental backups, I am now unable to backup at all and get an error message about insufficient storage memory on device. I have not added anything extra to the device so this has thrown me. I have deleted as much as I can, but still it wont work. Help!! Am now getting jittery!

Unit is: 400MHz RAM 64MB ROM 48MB ROM version A04 Free storage mem 9.15MB and Free program mem 10MB plus lots of capacity on CF and SD cards.

I have Vista and haven't used ActiveSync for ages, so I'm not sure of my facts here...

Is ActiveSync definitely configured to back up to the PC? Not to the X5? Also, which version of AS are you running? I see this on the web :
"With ActiveSync 4.x, Microsoft no longer offers the ability to backup and restore your Pocket PC."

From your description it does sound as if you're adding to the X5 rather than to your PC, which I know makes little sense...

Hi dahawthorne. appreciate your response, very interesting. It does sort of explain the problem. I have searched all "rules" and "options" but nothing seems to offer a choice of backup location. Till now it has always been the pc! Will check out version of activesync. as a matter of interest, what program do you recommend (if any) for backup? I see good reviews here of Sprite but I am on Pocket pc 2002 not compatible with sprite. Thanks.

I use SPB Backup which images the Axim to my CF.
I'll think more about this later - slept past the alarm and late for work... :-)

alas SPB backup does not work with Pocket PC 2002! Hope you made it to work ok!
