Stuck in Set-Up / Align : Touch Screen Does Not Respond X30

Stuck in Set-Up / Align : Touch Screen Does Not Respond X30

This post contains a solution -- read on.

We created a discussion thread with about 100 posts in it involving touch screens not responding --- leaving us stuck in set-up / align.

I started thinking that others who might have the same problem would get lost in the other thread ... so, I thought for their sake, I'd post the solution (that worked for me anyway) quick and simple with a clear explanatory title.

If you have opened your Pocket PC and then put it back together -- test first before replacing the screws. If it works, but then stops working after you replace the screws -- you probably tightened the screws too tightly.

Try loosening the screws a bit until it starts working again.

If you want to go through the other discussion, with some other problems and a variety of attempts to solve them:
    X30 with a lobotomy

There's actually a lot of information in the other thread ... links to hardware tear-down manuals, software, etc.

Hey Roger, a great thread with lot's of good info, sooo many posts, it would be worth doing a glossary of the links that you used to obtain this fix especially the remote control software that let you bypass align screen. Thanx for the good info.

Interesting idea Pedah. I don't know if I have time for that today. I agree that the other discussion was an interesting one. For those who want to understand their Pocket PCs better, it's worth a spin. I've summarized here because I'm sure that some of the people who have this problem will just want a quick answer to get their Pocket PCs working again.

A quick note on bypassing align screen. Doing this will confirm that the Pocket PC still works, even though the touch screen is not. When I did it, the buttons began to work and I browsed through a bunch of screens. However, if someone loosens the screws and the touch screen works again, it's an unnecessary step.

I used ActiveSync to remove the short-cut "welcome" found in the Windows / Setup directory. It points to welcome.com in the Windows directory. That's the program that provides the set-up screen and runs the align program. Removing the short-cut in the Windows / Setup directory is completely recoverable. If you then do a hard reset, the system will replace it automatically. You can even cut-paste it to your PC through ActiveSync and paste it back again. When you go through the set-up / align in the normal way, the system automatically removes it. If your Pocket PC is already aligned and working normally, you will not find a welcome short-cut in Windows / Setup.

See that's useful. take your time no rush but it would be worth a detailed summary. I read the whole thread from start to finish and ther were things there that I would never even have thought of.

This is the app I used to get past the screen alignment screen.

The Remote Screen Alignment application was developed to make it easier for users of Mobile Speak Pocket to align the screen of their Pocket PC devices without sighted help. If you have to hard format your Pocket PC device for any reason, you no longer need to align the screen manually. Please refer to the User's Manual before you start using this application.

Thanx, If you want to post them one by one I don't mind collecting them and putting them in one post further down the thread.

If you remove the welcome short-cut from Windows / Setup, you actually never have to put it back. That only takes you to the align screen automatically when you start the device. It is then automatically removed so that it doesn't take you there every time you start the device ... once ... first time is enough. It does reappear magically if you do a hard reset -- but you don't need to do that for the sake of screen alignment.

If you're trying to get it to work and it's getting in the way, just remove it. If you want to align screen later, just go to:

    settings -> screen

and click on the align button
