You should not have to do anything else at all. The x3 should recognise the card on insertion.
I assume that you have not purchased some super fast card ????. Have you checked the manufacturers site for compatibility with the x3 which is now one of Dell's older PDA's. This is a long shot as most cards are compatible, but it is worth checking.
You need to try a few things to determine what is causing the problem.
1) Have you another SD card that you can insert in the x3 ??. makes no difference the size. Doing so will identify if the X3 slot is working correctly or not.
2) If you have a card reader/camera or have access ( via a friend) to another PDA, try the card to see if it is recognised. It is always possible that the card is faulty in which case you should contact the vendor.
If it turns out the card is working correctly, then the only thing you can do with your x3 is carry out a hard reset ( after having backed up any data you want to keep). Hard reset is press and hold power and whilst doing so press reset.
Try the card again after the hard reset... If the x3 is still not recognising the card at all ( ignore any error messages or unknown card messages), then it could be that your SD slot is faulty. If this is the case, I'm afraid it will cost more for a repair than to buy a replacement unit.
I hope you get the problem solved, if not please post again and we can try formatting.... assuming the x3 recognises a card is inserted
