X30 with a lobotomy
Having trouble replacing the back up battery in the X30. After I replaced the battery I could not get the X30 to power on at all. Hooking to mains resulted in an amber button, but no activity. I have since removed the batter as I suspect it is a bit too large to fit into the cavity of the X30 and was placing pressure on the board.
After removing the replacement backup battery I am able to power on the X30, but am frozen at the blue start up screen (tap the screen to set up your pocket pc). I tap it but it does nothing. Soft and Hard resets result in the same.
The Dell splash screen takes overly long to clear and stuck on the set up screen.
Suggestions?

ActiveSync shows connection and I was even able to explore and transfer files from the PDA to my desktop and open them.

I mysteriously have made it to the align screen, but frozen again. Still able to explore using active sync.

Hrm, can repeatedly use the buttons to get to the align screen, but then it stops. Perhaps it is only the screen that is unresponsive. Time to check them cables I guess. Which cable is it that controls the touch response as opposed to carrying the video?

Huh, when the screen times out and dims, I can rouse it by touching it. Why would it detect that touch but not when I touch it to align it?

Since I can actually wake up the PDA with the touch screen I have to rule out a physical problem with it. It seems to be more of a software problem. Is there something harder than a hard reset? Can I reflash it somehow to really get it good and reset?
Another thing I notice is that the power button has no light on unless it is connected to mains. I can't recall if it is supposed to be amber when unconnected. I haven't let it charge enough to see if it goes green...

Bump for suggestions. Is there a way I can reinstall the OS? Is this thing a brick?

To summarize your problem:
After replacing the backup battery the Axim stopped turning on. The backup battery was removed because it was too big and pressed on the board. Since then it won't go past the align screen.
How could the battery be too large, is it different than the original? If so, you may have gotten the wrong battery. If the battery did indeed press too hard on the board you may have broken circuitry internal to the board. I would suggest putting a backup battery back into the unit and cleaning the screen area under the front chassis to make sure no dirt could be pressing the screen in that area.
The power button light will not be lit unless it is charging or an appointment is due.

Drifter here, sorry for not involving myself sooner as I had been on holiday. DNA obtained his battery from me and it is 100% identical to the original in everyway. Dell use a Varta V20HR in the original assembly and that is exactly what was supplied, fully sealled and identical in dimentions. So if the battery does not fit, then it is likely to be installed incorrectly. Their is a specific location for it.
From replacing batteries in the x3/x30 myself, I do know that the fitting of the motherboard into the case is a tight fit which is why 2 screws are used to tighten it down.
Having read the above posts, I would suggest that perhaps one or more of the connector ribbons are not inserted into their connectors correctly. Specifically the top right cable as you look at the unit. This one is easy to have at a slight angle, causeing a short or false message from the screen.
DNA, I'm back on line from holiday now, so please PM me if needed and we will sort this out.
I can 100% assure you ( and Mahstah) that the battery supplied is 100% correct and identical in every way.

I'm having the same problem. I just got a refurbished X30 and had no choice but to use a replacement battery. It fits. I can't imagine why the battery would be the problem but still ... big coincidence that both these problems involve a replacement battery. Mine happens to be a 2000 mAh Li-ion.
Also ... have problems with Microsoft ActiveSync. I had no choice but to install it (after I plugged X30 in with a power / data cable to charge it, my computer beeped and beeped relentlessly until I installed it) and it seems to work fine, especially give that the X30 isn't working. It connected and I was able to explore the X30 and synchronize Favorites. But it seems to have smashed Bluetooth and Infrared so far as Nokia PC Suite is concerned. I uninstalled ActiveSync and the error messages changed, but it's hidden COM ports and Bluetooth access somehow. Only tip I got from other boards is installation of IVT BlueSoleil Driver and BTDongle ... which looks a whole lot like something that I don't really need. I have installed IVT BlueSoleil Driver but it hasn't fixed the problem. I don't even know what I'm supposed to do with BTDongle.
