Now when I plug my Axim in, there's this sound that keeps repeating over and over again. I don't know how to write what the sound sounds like but maybe you hear it once when you plug in. punk punk ... not very good onomatopoeia, but kind of like hitting a couple of metal bars that sort of almost have bell tones. puook poonk -- it's a little musical in an instrument made out of spare metal pipes sort of way.

Sounds and Audio Devices
I tracked the sounds down as being C:\WINDOWS\Media
Windows XP Hardware Insert
Windows XP Hardware Remove
Suggesting that the device continues to connect / disconnect (or try) while plugged in. All I'm doing at this point is charging it using the USB charger / sync cable.
I remember this from before. It stopped when I installed ActiveSync. It may be trying to find something to connect to other than power. Please make it stop!
Wait a second (or two) ... has it finally stopped on its own? Sheesh! After an hour ... Maybe it ran out of memory or something ... max tries? I'm going to unplug and plug in again to see what happens.
It started again. Noisy piece of ....

It's possibly a firewall issue. The first thing you should try is disabling advanced network functionality in Settings-->Connections-->USB to PC.
I've always described the sound as a 'dee doomp'.

Interesing thought. I hadn't thought of a USB connection as involving the firewall. Once it's plugged in, I thought of it as being a hardware device on my computer. But then ... I can see why there might need to be protection ... just hadn't thought of it as being at this level. I tried advanced properties on my Nokia USB Modem connection (Network Connections through the Control Panel) just to see if I could find Settings -> Connections -> USB. It wasn't there, so I guess I have to ask which "Settings" from where? (Nokia USB Modem is the only USB icon currently showing btw).
If this turns out to be the problem, shouldn't I add an exception to the firewall so that the device works? And backing up: if there's a USB Modem icon in Network Connections, shouldn't there be one for my X30 connection too?

Continuing to look into things; checked the help and support information on my computer. USB device connections, yielded something that says: "The first time you connect a USB device, the "Found New Hardware" message is displayed in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar."
This isn't the first time I've connected this device. It's been connected via ActiveSync before. So, maybe the computer is confused. It's not a new device, but it doesn't have a standard connection set-up for USB.
Still searching for a way to do that.

Sorry rogerfgay, my instructions would only pertain to a WM5 device and it looks like you have 2003. In that case, have you looked at any of the ActiveSync troubleshooting guides available?

You might be right proud of this Axim user since you've known since before he had a working X30. I decided to bring it along on a business trip, and now I'm posting this through the hotel's Wi-Fi connection.
Under these circumstances though, I'm wondering why AximUsers does not have WAP access.

Similar Problems with X30: Won't Start up at all
My 2-year-old X30 is having some similar issues. I am new to this forum, so if I make mistakes, please forgive me. My unit was working perfectly until 2 weeks ago when during a trip the unit would shut down completely with a fresh battery. No low backup battery message ever displayed. Now the unit will not power up at all, even though the battery shows a full charge as indicated by a green power button. Changing batteries and reset have affected not change. Any ideas? Thanks.

The result we got from work in my X30, recorded in detail in this thread, was that the screws were too tight. That apparently was causing a short or something. I was used to working with wood instead of electronics in a plastic case, and tightened to the point where I had probably slightly deformed the plastic case. The problem went away immediately when I loosened the screws a little bit.

That isn't to say that you can't get anything from this discussion. If you go through it, you'll find that I tried most everything - software and hardware. There are links to instructions, manuals, etc. along the way. Even if you have a different problem, information in this thread might be helpful.
