GPS Software for X30?
So I'm thinking about getting a GPS SD Card for my 312mhz X30, like the GlobalSat.
http://www.usglobalsat.com/item.asp?itemid=17
I don't have Bluetooth so I think this is the best I can do. It has 512 MB built into it so I should be able to store maps there. (Otherwise, what other solution would someone else recommend?)
What is the popular GPS software to get that is US Centric. I noticed that TomTom released V6 of their program, but that seems to be Western Europe maps only. I'd sure like something that doesn't have to be preprogrammed on my desktop PC, has auto-routing, and voice prompts.
I did a search in the X30 forum but little was said about this topic.

It will work, but obviously you will limit the size of maps you can install due to the 512 MB size.
One thing to consider is that you will also have to think about an extended battery as the SD GPS card will draw power from the axim battery, thus shortening its working time.
Personally, unless you plan to use the GPS handheld, I'd suggest a wired GPS reciever. Then you can use higher capacity storage cards.
TomTom have got US maps also for V6, but consider the fact that TT6 europe offers a western Europe map @980MB, so could nor fit on a 512MB card. IT would be a shame if you could have a whole US map at the same size, but could not use it because your limit is 512MB.
Regarding your comment about preprogramming. I'm not aware of any GPS software that requires preinstallation onto a PC.
I would strongly suggest that either you consider a wired GPS receiver ( will need a 12v power supply) or consider choosing your nave software first so that you can see if the maps you want will fir in 512MB

OK, it's obvious I don't know crap about PPCs. I am used to using a GPS unit where you have to load in way points by hand or download them from your desktop.
A tiny bit of searching led to this:

This *should* let me use the Garmin Legend I already have, leave my SD slot free, and let me use any map software I want. Looks like I'll have to really start investing in SD cards
Clearing out my cookies let me get to TomTom USA. I'll just go fumble around for a bit...

I see you listing, but I am missing what this is a compatibility list for ??. If you mean TomTom, I can assure that TomTom 5 and TomTom 6 are compatible with the x3/x30.
Regarding the cable. It seems expensive when you consider ebay have Wired receivers with cable for the x3/x30 from $38. But it may be that your Garmin is a better receiver

I'll take a look at those, too. Though I did find a slightly cheaper place online. I also need to get a car charger, so if I find a multipurpose cable...
I know the Garmin is a good unit, I'll have to read about these cheap receivers on Ebay. Maybe after you pair down all the extra stuff on the Garmin like the case, screen, buttons, etc, the receiver can sell for that little. I'm just getting into all this stuff so I don't really know what all is involved. It's cool though.

Drifter, you mentionned: "I can assure that TomTom 5 and TomTom 6 are compatible with the x3/x30." I was under the impression that Tomtom 6 required WM2005, which is not the case of x3/x30.

I'm not one to exaggerate or mislead people and I can assure you that tomtom6 works very well on ALL Dell axims and I have tested ALL of the axims.
Your misunderstanding of the need for WM5 comes from the fact that TomTom only report TT6 as compatible with the x51 and x51V. This ACTUALLY means that that is all that they have tested it with so far and thus is all the can support it on.
When TomTom5 was launched, the same issue existed , with TomTom only giving the X50v as compatible. Within a few months all Dell axims were supported including the X5.
From my tests so far, I have only had problems installing to a Jornada 565.
TT6 WILL WORK WITH YOUR AXIM

I wish there was a demo to try out. For $150 I'd like to be certain I actually liked the product, esp when there are cheaper alternatives out there.

You actually get what you pay for with TomTom. I've used several GPS softwares out there and none of them come close for smoothness of map scrolling, graphics, options, and ease of use. You will be glad you didn't go with something half the price and half the quality. Not to rip on others' GPS softwares, but after using a few my personal favorite is TomTom.
