Messenger update solution

If your messenger update seems to be installed on your pocket pc
but wont work, "the service is not compatible" Fault, try this
make sure that you have installed the update,
go to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\PPC 2003 - MSN ® Messenger Update

copy the files msmsgs8.cab and msmsgs8.ini

and paste them into the pocket pc via activesync

on the pocketpc open file explorer and find the files

tab the cab file and now it should work

my problem was that the opgrade seems to be installed,
but never went to the pocket pc

I have loaded the program via the microsoft installer for the ms website and as you described in the thread, but now it gives me a message the the sevice is not available even though i can log on to messsenger via my pc. any ideas?

I don't know how you are connecting your pocket pc, if it is via
activesync and cradle Press the "setup button" and click on the third page,
check that the passtrough is set to "internet"

goto to the file menu
click on connection option

set the "ethernet" option
and try again

(sorry if the description is not correct i have a danish activesync i don't know what the button name is in the english version)

I have struggled with this until im fed up with it.
Here is my experience on the subject maybe it will help someone fix the issue.

ppc conects to net fine but when tried messenger it said not compatible.

uploaded the patch (yes it was correct version) did not work
until you do a soft boot ( you must do this, the patch even tells you too)

i now get the messege that the service is temp. unavailable

i contacted msn messenger for ppc, they had me hardboot and start over it did not work so they refered me to support@microsoft.com

in their reply i was told that it seemed to be a problem for my hardware vendor (that quote should sound familar to any tech)
i havnt talked to dell yet as I needed a break from the task(will do this week)
Kudos to the users of this site for it has been more helpfull than all other sources

Hi, I have an Axim X3i, and i've already instaled the MSN Patch
I can log in to the MSN service but it kick me out like every 3 minutes or less

Does any one know something about that

I also instaled the patch to correct problemes that dell suggest

FINALY I got mine working!!!!

things to do

Update msn make sure its corect version 3=2002 4=2003
after that you must do a soft reset.

If you get an error after this stating (service unavailable try later)
then You are already logged in msn on your desktop at home or office
and ppc msn doesnt seem to be able to tell it to logoff

as of now mine is working. no thanks to microsofts support or dells
