The Gears Have Been Greased. Mobile Location-Based Services are ready to roll! - Part 1

I just got back from GSM World Congress last week and I'm in the midst of CTIA/MDC this week as I write. I'm pleased to report that the industry is finally catching up with the hype surrounding mobile LBS. Today this stuff is cost effective and much easier to develop, deploy, and maintain in both the consumer and enterprise worlds, as compared to even a year ago. That will be the focus of this first installment – the state of the Wireless industry as it relates to LBS today, and how things have matured to the point that there are solid solutions to each of the problems that have plagued LBS for the last few years.
The mobile Internet in general, and specifically Location Based Services, haven't taken off because to date, there have not been compelling applications to drive adoption. Plain and simple. Borrowing from a bumper sticker - “No applications, No adoption. Know applications, Know adoption”. There are a lot of reasons for this lack of apps, and my own history in working to develop commercial LBS illustrates this point quite well and is a good backdrop for understanding these reasons.
