Dell may change to Smart Phones!
A rumor is circulating that Dell intends to phase out its line of traditional handhelds.
However, according to BargainPDA, this doesn't mean that the company is necessarily going to completely stop making mobile devices.
Instead, it is considering shifting its focus to so-called converged devices, a term some use to describe a range of products with cellular-wireless functionality, whether these be handhelds or smartphones.
This isn't the first hint that Dell is putting together a smartphone. A product roadmap that was leaked to Brighthand last year indicated that the company intends to release one this summer.

What's everyone thoughts on the whole 'converged device' concept?
Personally i would rather keep my handheld and cell phone seperate. Phones are an ever changeing never stable electronic device that's in and the envy of all one second and a piece of garbage the next. Phones get phased out and outdated REAL quick. now mergeing it with a device that suppost to help you organize your life and keep track of things and contains lots of personal/business data. Are you willing to replace your smartphone every few months as new models phase in and out?
I wouldnt, I'm one of those types that uses something, sticks to it, enhance it along the way, and scrap and replace when it's on it's last leg.
Personally i'd never convince myself to get a smart phone and would keep the two seperated for as long as possible and hope they still make PPCs and PDA without phone features.

Why bother with a phone /PDA system at all... It won't be long before WiFi will be available at low cost everywhere and then a WiFi PDA will be all that you need... Who needs phone networks.
Isn't this the way Skype saw the future ??
Now for some contention.
I personally hate it when I get gease or marks on my PDA screen and lets face it, holding a phone/PDA on your ear to talk must get the screen very very greasy. I accept BT headsets will eliminate this, but who really wants to walk arround with flashing ear jewellery !!!!
Shall I duck now ???

I agree and have been resistant to merging the two devices however it would save space. I never liked the treo b/c it is too small but I think Dell and microsoft need to stick with and fix these darn axim x51v's and windows mobile. after all the white screen of deaths I now have a slow loading and sometimes locked up axim I did a hard reset and lost some files off my unit got duplicate phone and calendar entries and a lot of heart and headaches, I love the device but it is just soo much trouble and soo slow I sometimes wonder why I switched from palm platform. They need to get busy with an A07

I agree with everyones comments. I never was really into the whole smart phone thing. For one thing the screens r too small, although I do like the thumb keyborad. The other thing is that for a network like cingular, they are soon going to start their UMTS network in my area. So at that time, if I want to take advantage of it, I will have to upgrade my phone. And stuff like this happens all the time. For this reason I would rather keep my cell phone seperate and my good old axim seperate.
On another note, it would be great if my phone could keep the connection to my BT headset while allowing me to dial from my axim via BT. If I dial using my axim, my nokia 6230 disconnects my head set. Otherwise that would be the ultimate I could just leave my phone in my bag and just use my axim and headset to make calls

I couldn't agree with everyone more.....Why would I want to carry a very large smart phone ALL the time? I don't need my Axim on the weekends very much and as all of you have stated....I have had around 9-10 cell phones in 8 years. I don't want to spend that kind of money to update my PPC every year.
Not to mention the hassles of gettting everything up and running smoothly. Like Tien said....I like to stick with something and enhance it as I go.
The main reason I bought the Axim was for GPS use. A smartphone's screen is FAR to small to make this practical.
I LOVE THE AXIM!!!!
Take Care,

keep cell phones and pda separate
I posted this on the poll to see if Dell should keep making pda's .
I go through a phone about every 2 years. Would I replace a smartphone that often? At what they cost I should hope not. I am not that enthused about the idea of smartphones. I should hope my Axim lasts a lot longer than that. If production does stop I'll simply pickup a "spare". There are quite a few articles out there that argue to keep PDAs and cell phones separate. I back that idea.
I've been building onto my Axim. I wasn't planning on getting a new one every couple of years . Cells are certainly a more disposable technology given how fast they've changed and how inexpensive they've become. That's my two cents.
It would seem I'm not alone at least.
Long live the Axim !

Totally agree with you man. When I go for a run I bring only my little cell with me. I certainly wouldn't want to bring an axim or a smartphone along! What if i fell and cracked the smartphone's screen. That'll be lots of money down the drain. Besides why would I want to carry all that bulk to the mall, when I'm in a club or at the beach??? It just doesn't make senese.
