No Windows Mobile SE Updates for older Axims

Oh well... what can ya do? Sell your older Axim (X5 or X3) and get yourself an X30 if you want Windows Mobile SE.

In a pair of announcements that will surely disappoint many, both HP and Dell have made it clear that they will not release Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC Second Edition upgrades for any current or older models.

This means the only way to get an iPAQ or Axim with the latest version of Microsoft's operating system for handhelds is to buy one of the recently-released or upcoming models that come with it.

While this is a disapointment I'm not sure that I'm ready to chastise Dell for this decision. It just seems that the only 'real' advantage to second edition are the ability to have native landscape views and support for VGA which our beloved X3's won't do anyone as far as I know. So for now, I'll have to settle for a 3rd party solution of this NYDITOT or just live with it the way it is. Frankly, it's really not that much of an issue for me except for browsing. I will say though that I agree with the comment on pocket pc thoughts where the reviewer said Dell should have stated their intentions on day one instead of getting our hopes up and then shooting us down.

I was a little disappointed, but what can you do? Dell has made a decision, and that's that. Sure, it would have been nice, however, my X3i is running great with WM 2003. Other than Landscape mode, there really aren't any earth shattering enhancements.

I updated my Axim X3i with the flash image I downloaded from dell.com. Interestingly enough, it came with a utility that let me backup my previous flash image in case something went wrong.

What if someone with an Axim X30 provided us with a flash image using the backup utility? I could test it on my X3i to see if it upgrades to 2003 SE...
