Windows Mobile 2003 SE Update

As you may already be aware, Windows Mobile 2003 SE is due out. However Dell has no plans to provide the updated OS to current Axims. This update includes WPA support. It seems that Dell may offer the upgrade if customers demand it. I've already badgered my Dell rep and signed the online petition at:

I am also a member of the Dutch Pocket PC club, and on the forum, one of the members reported (after a telephone call with a dell representative) that the updates will be available from May for the X3 and October for the X5. Is suppose this is very good news, this is definately not an April Fools gag, the message was posted yesterday.

Ik heb zojuist even contact gehad met Dell Technical Support om te vragen wanneer zij een upgrade/update naar Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition gaan aanbieden.

De persoon die ik aan de telefoon kreeg wist helemaal niet dat er een nieuwe versie aan zit te komen, maar wilde wel even informeren.

Na een minuut of vijf in de wacht te hebben gestaan wist deze medwerker mij te vertellen dat eind mei er een update voor de Axim X3 via de website van Dell te downloaden is. De update voor de Axim X5 zal pas in oktober beschikbaar zijn.

Dit heeft hij van marketing management te horen gekregen.

Ik dacht vast wel leuk om even te horen....

I called Dell today (April 6) and asked the sales representative whether an Axim X3i I ordered would come with WM2003SE, and she told me that they would bundle an upgrade for it at no extra charge (normally $30). She then confirmed with a supervisor and said that the new Axim X3i's have WM2003SE built in.

Looks like the petition worked.

If you order a new one, it comes preinstalled.

An upgrade for an existing Axim X3 costs $30.

I just received my new Axim X3i (4/16/2004) and it does not have SE installed on it! I called tech support and the sales departments and no-one there knew of any updates to the pocket pc OS...

Yeah I got my X3i 3 days ago and it too did not come with 2003SE.

Hello All-

I too am looking forward to WM 2003 SE. We do have to ask one question - When is the official "Microsoft" release date for 2003 SE? Microsoft "announced it" in late March There's a big difference between announcing and confirming a release date. Even the official press release doesn't mention an RTM (Release to Manufacturing) date. Longhorn has been announced, but that won't hit the RTM phase for over a year (or now maybe 2)! In this case, 2003 SE might go into a RTD or "Release to Dell", as you can't walk into Best But and pick up a copy ;-). Not %100 how it will work with this type of OS.

The big issue has been "Will Dell (and other manufacturers) offer the upgrade?" Understandably so, and they should. I don't think Dell intentionally wants to hack off it's customers.

I think we need to put the horse back in front of the cart, and confirm an official release date from Microsoft. Once this is determined, then Dell will be getting more info on the product, and how if necessary) it can be tailored for it's Axim product line. I've seen quite a few dev tools for 2003 SE on the MS Technet site. Also, many PPC software vendors are just now releasing updated versions that "now support WM 2003" Dell doesn't want to hack off it's customers, so once more info is availible, they'll make a final decision.

I too signed the petition for WM2003SE, and we all need to support it's cause. How far off is it? I don't know. All we can do is await an official release date from Microsoft . . . and then from Dell . . . Then Us :w00t:
