Handango Releases the Handango Yardstick for Q4 2002 and a Special Edition for 2002
(02/13/2003)
Leading provider reports mobile software economy data from a variety of industry sources
HURST, Texas - February 13, 2003 - Handango, the leading platform and publisher of mobile software, today released the Handango
Yardstick, a quarterly report on the state of the mobile software economy. Handango also released a special edition of the Handango
Yardstick with data and trends for all of 2002. Handango powers the software and digital media stores for some of the biggest
brands in the mobile software market including Nokia, Motorola, Kyocera, Palm, Sony, Microsoft, Handspring, HP, Sprint, Cingular,
T-Mobile USA, Orange and more than 100 others. Data in the Handango Yardstick reflects sales from these and other stores and across
all major mobile operating systems including Java, Symbian, Palm OS®, Pocket PC, Linux and others.
2002: DEFYING THE ECONOMY
In the 2002 Special Edition Handango Yardstick, Handango reports year-end statistics on the rapidly growing mobile software market,
with a focus on user needs and trends. In 2002, more than 3,000 new companies began selling mobile software and more than 14,000
new mobile software applications were created.
In the "Stat of the Year," Handango reports that software spending for 2002 increased more than 40% compared to 2001, based on same
store sales data.
"The mobile software market continues to defy the economy with evermore impressive growth," said Laura Rippy, chief executive
officer at Handango. "By any standard - number of developers, number of applications, revenue growth - this market is helping
millions of people worldwide live more productive, fun, interesting lives."
The Special Edition highlights user interests with a report on the top mobile software search words for 2002 as well as the top
search words for each operating system. The top 10 search words in 2002 were games, dictionary, bible, remote control, chess, maps,
mail, medical, golf and MP3/music.
"In the Spotlight" takes a look at the top 5 best selling applications for the year by operating system.
FOURTH QUARTER: STRONG HOLIDAY SALES, HIGHER UPTAKE
In the fourth quarter, the market for mobile software continued its rapid growth, fueled by a strong holiday season and growth in
the number of applications purchased per user. The overall market grew substantially in the holiday season with more than 38% of
sales occurring in December. Fourth quarter sales increased 47% over the fourth quarter of 2001 on a same store sales basis.
Contributing strongly to this growth was an increase in the average number of applications purchased. The average buyer added 2.1
applications to his/her handset, up strongly from 1.8 in the third quarter.
The Handango Yardstick for Q4 2002 also reports the average selling price (ASP) of applications by category. Medical software topped
the list at an ASP of $27.83. Games and entertainment categories trailed at the end with an average selling price of $15.93 and
$12.46 respectively. Average selling price for applications in other categories was closely grouped between $19.63 and $22.50.
"In the Spotlight," the Handango Yardstick highlights best selling health and fitness applications.
