Dell Preparing Axim X3 with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi

The PDA has been approved for sale in the U.S. by the FCC

JANUARY 14, 2004 - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has approved for sale in the U.S. an Axim X3 PDA from Dell Inc. with both a Bluetooth and an 802.11b chip, according to documents posted on the FCC Web site.

Adding a Bluetooth PDA to its lineup would fill a hole for Dell, which thus far hasn't released an Axim with that feature. Bluetooth is a short-range wireless networking technology that is used to connect mobile devices, such as PDAs and cell phones, or accessories, such as headsets.

Great, and I just bought my X3i less then 3 weeks ago ... I wanted Bluetooth but settled. Oh well, maybe in another year or two i'll upgrade again.

I'm not sure what all Bluetooth requires, but I was playing with my X3i a bit ago and noticed where you can make a new connection there you can select if you want to make a connection to Bluetooth, I tapped on that and said it does not have the software on this device (obviously)........I am sure Dell will have an update for us that have already purchased the X3i with out the software for Bluetooth

Bluetooth requires hardware to run. Dell originally was going to put BT in the X3i's but they scrapped the idea. Some X3i's still have the BT logo on top of them. It wouldn't suprise me if the software was still on them either. But the hardware is not there.

You won't be able to upgrade your X3i to a bluetooth device with just software.

Hi... New member here...

This kinda explains why Dell keeps dropping the prices on the Axim X3s. In early Jan, it was came down to $345 or so, 10% off from the $379 price range. Then in about 1.5 weeks later, then took off another 10% which dropped to $314. Thats when I jumped it. This past weekend, they took off another 5%, and now it's sitting at $297. I've had it for less than a week, but Dell wouldn't match the new price drop. Bummer.

Regardless... I love this machine. It's so much better than my old iPAQ, which died after two years. And even at $314, it was still a much better value than what the competition was offering.
