Is it possible....
Hi, I hope anyone can help me - I'm a complete newbie! Assuming I've got my internet connection sorted out (which I haven't yet), is it possible to access my AOL account to read my Emails from my PDA? So, for example, my PDA is using infra-red to connect to my mobile phone, which contains the modem, so I can access my Email from AOL in the street, anywhere.
Is this possible? And if so, how? Thanks in advance. Rich

What model Axim do you have Rich? If without wifi or Bluetooth, then no, you will not be able to connect to your phone to get email. IR is very limited in the supported transmissions, it's a legacy connection for transferring small files only.

Thanks for your reply
Sorry, I should have stated the model. I have a Dell Axim x50. My mobile phone is a Samsung D500, which I believe has WAP, email and internet capabilities. So I'm sure I can use the phone to access the internet and maybe use bluetooth to send the data to my PDA (I think). I just don't know how it all works. I've downloaded all the manuals for these devices but they may as well be in a different language. If I'm being too vague or too much of a newbie, I will happily stop bothering you with my problems. Rich.

Does tour phone have Bluetooth? You can pair your phone with you axim and use it for internet access and get internet access that way, but you need to set up an internet connection with your telco, I'm posting from pc through mobile now

Yes, my phone does have Bluetooth but it's the whole business of setting up and internet account that confuses me. When you have to enter number like DNS, ISP, etc. I don't know how to do any of that

Firstly, you need to get an account with your service provider, and the dial up details, find out if they even offer this service?"using your mobile phone as a modem", and packet data internet connection.
Most of the other network details can be set to assign automatically in the setup on the axim, the main info that you need is, the dial up number, common ones Like *99# for example, They vary with different phones and providers. Username, and password details are often null, again the telco will let you know these. Often there's an advanced string dialing code that has to be entered, which telco will give you. I'm on the axim at the moment, but will send you some screenshots tonight, of the setup if you like!

Yep, thanks for taking the time to help. I will be looking into the service providers this week. I just want to get my Axim x50 PDA on-line so I can check my Emails when I'm on holiday. If it's not too much trouble, I would appreciate those screenshots of the setup. Cheers.

for each of the other tabs in the advanced settings
Click OK then finish and your setup is complete.
Take into account that I'm showing you the settings that work for me with my telco and phone so yours may vary quite a bit from what I have to input to connect and I'm also using x51. but I don't think it's that different. I also don't know what country you are in, so make sure you are careful about the pricing of any service you sign up for as I've seen lot's of info that it is quite expensive in US and EU for data plans for phones.
HTH GO well

Ok here we go
Go start/settings/ connections and tap the connection Icon
then select add a new modem connection
which allows you to name your connection and select your modem type, from the dropdown menu select Bluetooth
then you should get to a screen like this and as you have already paired your axim to your phone you should see it in the list
Then you enter the dial up number provided by the service provider
Sorry about that shot but when the keyboard is minimised there is an advanced button tap on that and you come to the advanced settings screen where you can enter the advanced string command
