ActiveSync 4.5 not sync'ing with Axim x51v
Hello everyone,
I've posted something similar in the Dell community (no responses yet) and thought I might ask you folks for some help as well. I did a search on your forum but haven't found a total solution yet.
OK, the basics: I recently purchased a Dell Axim x51v with WM5 with ROM version A12. I have not been able to sync using ActiveSync 4.5 with my Dell PC running Windows XP Pro SP2. Yes, there is antivirus and firewall protection (McAfee) but I've either completely disabled the McAfee or configured the firewall to allow the required applications and ports (per the recommendations on this site and Microsoft):
Apps:
Wcesmgr.exe, Wcescomm.exe, Rapimgr.exe
Inbound TCP:
990, 999, 5678, 5721, 26675
Outbound UDP:
5679
I've reinstalled ActiveSync 4.5 and even reverted back to 4.1and have tried multiple hard resets. The Axim does sync up with my wife's laptop. On another thread in a different forum, someone mentioned the creation of an ActiveSync folder under ../Documents & Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/ but there was no such folder created.
I really just want to be able to install/uninstall software on my Axim so the other features like sync'ing my Outlook, calendar aren't crucial.
Hope someone here can help a frustrated newbie.
Marc

activesync 4.5
I have used 4.5 with Axim 51X,ao12 etc successfully. Check the Ax active sync setting be sure the usb is checked. When you set AS on the pc it should ask you for a name(i had 2 axims). I did remove the firewall as the sync was eratic. I have since changed cpu and now use windows mobile.

Greetings Marc, and welcome to AximUsers.
Do you get any activity from ActiveSync, ie a green cycle of the systray icon? Does the device show up under Device Manager? Are you on a docking station or USB hub? If so, try direct connect. Also try disabling advanced USB functionality in Settings-->Connections-->USB to PC.

Hey Mahstah,
Thanks for the welcome. OK, this is what happens -> AS 4.5 is installed on my PC. I plug the USB cable into the USB ports at theback of the computer. There is some activity as my system recognises the Axim and says the device is ready for use. Then the AS green circle glows and spins. Keeps spinning....still spinning.....staops spinning and an error message appears saying the connection has failed and if I want to try trouble shooting the issue. When I select the troubleshooting route, it fails abruptly saying that astu.exe has encountered and unexpected error and has been forced to terminate.
Bdiscount,
I did what you suggested with the USB - no change. When I first installed AS 4.5, I was promptet to enter a name.
Latest action:
I completely uninstalled McAffee antivirus and Firewall. Reinstalled AS 4.5. No change. Uninstalled 4.5, reinstalled 4.2 that came on the CD. No change. What in tarnation is going on here???

Try doing a soft reset on your Axim before putting it into the sync holder. That worked for me.

Gooday, Marc. WHat other apps are you trying to sync. Depending on what you have selected in sync settings, it will hang if you ask it to sync large apps, and quite often will serve up the errors you talk about. Try removing old partnerships in AS and ax AS, and then reconnect, and only sync to default programs, [if you have third party apps that require syncing, you can do it manually] and see if that resolves the sync issue

Hey guys,
YEEHAH!!! Mahstah, you were right - I had to disable the advanced USB functionality and it sync'd right away. Dell Tech support did not offer much help. They sent me links to various troubleshooting guides and when those didn't work, turned around and said they didn't support software issues.
To everyone, thanks for your suggestions. Forums like this are invaluable and I hope to be able to contribute as I become more comfortable with the Axim.

Just a question for my own info, did you you ever get an error message of any sort when you could not sync, other than the unexpected error AS has to close. It seems that there is more than one way that this AS glitch can manifest? As in this thread Pocket PC Networking Error Message. I have had the same problem more than once and you have shown me that "there is more than one way to swing a cat"

Hey Pedah,
With AS4.2, there was no message but with 4.5, a window popped up saying ActiveSync could not connect to my device. It then asked if I wanted to launch the troubleshooting tool. If I chose to use the tool, it would run and then stop with another message stating that astu.exe had encountered an unexpected error and needed to terminate. Not very helpful.
BTW, Dell tech support told me I shouldn't be using version 4.5.
