I need help understanding what VPN & proxy server are

I am somewhat new to wireless networking. I have a Dell Axim X5 and would like to connect to my home network so I can view files and see my computers at home.
1st. Question. Do I need to setup a VPN on my main computer (192.168.1.100)
2nd. Question. On my X5 it tell me to setup my proxy server, but I have no idel what go into those blank spaces.
3rd. Question. It also tell my to setup my VPN and if what certificates are on my Axim.

Please Help

If your main objective is to see your home PC on your X5 and also then be able to access files on the Home PC, then I am afraid, this is not possible via WiFi without additional software.

If connecting via WiFi, then the connection from the Axim should be to your server/ wifi point and not to your PC.

However, Once you are connected to your WiFi point, you will be able to see the axim on your PC and access files via that using the standard software in Windows XP , but as I said, this is only one way, sorry

I would like to respectfully disagree. Viewing files on the desktop is possible over wifi as long as the same router connects both the wired desktop and the wireless laptop. I have watched video stored on a desktop by remotely browsing to it over wireless. Mp3 listening should be fine too.

Note that I did have to use third party software to achieve this. Both Resco Explorer and Z2 PocketLAN will connect you to your computer over wifi and let you browse/transfer/open files. Both programs support authentication for security.

No VPN configuration is required.
