How do I get ActiveSync on my PC

Hello, I just recently purchased a Axim X3i and it came without a CD. I read the users manual pdf file on the dell site and it says not to plug the unit in untill activesync is installed on your pc. I purchased a "companion cd" off ebay and it had a copy of activesync 3.8. I double clicked to install and saw that it put a number of items on my pc. But, there is no activesync icon and activesync is not listed in my program files on my pc. Thinking the pc hardware wizard may find what was installed, I went ahead and put axim in the cradle and pluged it into my usb port. Hardware wizard said could not install because could not identify device. I am new to pocket pc, I had a handspring visor about 8years ago and synced it (on old pc, not this one) using hotsync... so I am assuming like hotsync, activesync should be somewhere on my desktop.

Bottom line questions:
How do I get activesync on my pc?
Once there how do I get hardware wizard to recognize my Axim?

Their could be a number of reasons why the X31 is not being recognised.

Firts, I recommend you uninstall Activesync 3.8 from your PC. This version of the program requires yout PDA to be connected via a COMM port below 13 ( virtual comm that is). It is not difficult to find that the PDA is connected via COMM 23-28 depending on what else you have connected.

Next download Activesync 4.1 from Microsoft ( search on Activesync 4.1) . This is a FREE program ( sorry, you did not need to buy the CD). This no longer has the Comm restriction.

Install this program on your PC and then check to make sure that you have switched off any firewalls or programs such as Zonealarm or Spybot.

Plug in the X3i and the PC should now find it and sync.

After that, you can restart all firewalls etc.
