Unhappy Installed a wifi sd card but can't access the internet.

I have recently installed a wifi sd card on my x3 but can't access the internet.

It looks like it is connected to my home wireless network (according to the Status in the SD WAN Utility) but when I try to access the internet via Internet Explorer I get the message "cannot find required page". It is a valid page which can be accessed when the PPC is in the cradle and connected to my computer).

I have tried all combinations of settings on the browser and SD WLAN programs but still no good.

The most logical thing to check is that you have set the security settings on your PDA to the same as those of your router ie WEP, encryption etc.

Thanks for the reply to "Can't access the internet"

I believe I have already set it up correctly but I'll check it ....but I am being told that I am connected (SD WLAN utility) and this wouldn't happen if I didn't have the correct encryption setup would it ?

The Dell Wlan utility initially shows the strength of signal that is being received, this is not however an indication of connection. I suspect most other Wlan utilities are similar. Think of it like a radio, at any time your radio is being bathed in signals from 100plus stations, you have to tune it to hear one station clearly. A WLAN measures the signal strength and then offers options to tune to one of the base stations. But will not allow you to make a true connection until the security settings are correct.

For example at present, my WLAN utility and site search shows me with a strong signal and the ability to connect to 3 networks, but as these have encryption and I do not know the passwords, I cannot surf on any of them.

the other thing to check is under connections. Make sure this is set to connect to Internet and not work

So in the 'Status' tab of the program called 'SD WLAN Utility' ..... if the field Status says 'Connected' is it really connected to my network or are you saying that I have to do something more to actually connect to it ?
Also, in the Settings/Configure Wireless Networks it says 'Connected'.

Yes I have it set to 'Internet' and my other settings are Networks to Access - All available, Automatically connect to non preferred networks - check box set, Option set for Use server assigned IP address.

Thanks for the update. I suspect it is connected, but not authorising you to use the connection.

I will have to guiess a little hear as I have a x50v, but at the top of the Today screen, you are likely to have an icon that looks like a lighthouse with circles arround it ?????. If you just have two small arrows and a x then you are not connected.

You need to look at the configuration of the Wireless network settings. and check that the authentication and encryption is matching the server also check the 802.1x settings

Dont ask me why, but sometimes when I have had problems, I have found changing the setting "network to access" from All to only access points and then back, has kick started a connection

Just a thought, as it will connect via your PC, could the settings be such that the PDA is looking for a proxy server ??. You need to check this also

That's done it ! Toggling the "network access" did the trick, many thanks. You're right I did have the 2 arrows and a cross. Thanks again.
