Please Help

Hello my name is brandon and i just bought an axim x50 off of ebay it is brand new and looks like it is going to work great but one problem it is in french and i need english!
I have read the post on how to change the launguage and ordered a CF card to help me, i have also downloaded what i think is the right program that i need. my dilema is that i have no idea what you all are talking about formatting the cf card to FAT or somthing.. and do i just load the program onto the CF card then put it in the X50 and do the 4 button thingy.. someone please break this down to like a 3rd grade level for me i am in the ARMY we are not that smart... LOL.. thanks ahead of time and here is some info on my Axim

Rom: 128
Version: A02

Brandon, I don't know which post you're referring to, but I'm guessing that the advice was to install a new ROM (operating system). I also don't have an X50, but I guess it's similar to the X51v. In this case you need an SD card - I don't think (not sure) that the Axim looks for a CF when it's trying to install a new ROM. They're dirt cheap.
By "the correct program" do you mean 2 files, one about 1KB and the other about 40MB?
The "FAT" comments are pretty much irrelevant for your purposes. In order to get the files on to the SD card you'll need to put them on via your computer through a card reader. If your computer doesn't see a formatted card it will offer to format it for you - take the default it offers and it will work fine.
Once you have the 2 files on the SD card it's just the 3-button press. If you need more help with that see this Youtube video - YouTube - Dell AXIM X51V/X50V WM6 Update Guide NOT FOR X50 OR X51!
Note the title, but I think this refers to the ROM he's installing, not the hardware - can any X50 owners confirm that you use the 3-button salute to upgrade?

Welcome to the site Brandon, typing this slowly for you army types to follow When talking about formatting a card, SD or CF, Fat refers to the file system. The axim uses the Fat file system from microsoft. Not the NTFS file system introduced with Windows 2000. To format a card, which also removes any information from the card by the way, you either need a card reader for your PC, or do it in the axim itself. As yours axim speaks french, you might want to try it on the PC. Insert the card into the reader and open my computer, Right click on the card, and in the menu options you should see format, select that and a little window will open. It's fairly self explanatory from there. Select full format, not quick format, and select file system from the drop down menu. Should see Fat, Fat16, Fat 32, select the last and click format. It's done.

As for flashing the ROM, operating system image, of the device, You Need To Be Sure You Have The Right Files For Your Device. There will be two files, one with the extension .nbh , and one with the extension .crc . Let us know what files you have exactly, cause if you have a file that ends with the extension .exe , that is meant to run from the PC whilst the axim is connected via activesync or WMDC.

Edit: Dahawthorn and I were writing our replies at the same time I think, using the bootloader method it is usually recommended to use a SD card, but I do think it will work from the CF as well???

Brandon,
To be safe, rather than cutting-edge with a non-Dell upgrade, I recommend the official Dell one.

Axim X50 system update utility with A03 English ROM image for Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. This update can be applied to either Axim X50 520MHz and/or Axim X50 416MHz.

Dahwthorne has the right file at that link, there is also a rom update to windows Mobile 5 at this page, which you may want to try. after the 2003 update. I recommend you bookmark that page as there are also links there for the rollback rom to 2003 if you don't like 5, or it doesn't run well for you.

All these files are .exe, download to your PC, connect your axim and get it syncing via activesync or windows mobile device centre if you have vista or 7, then just double the file to update the rom on the axim. Make sure the axim is fully charged on on mains power in the sync cradle while you do this. Have fun

I started to write this next part this morning and then thought the official Dell would be a safer course, but if you'd like to try getting your hands dirty you could join HTCGeeks and download a 6.5 ROM from here :
Rom Release! Dell Axim x50 WM6.5 L15 23016 - Alpha1 - HTCGeeks Forum
Read the whole thread before you commit to it.

A sync cable will do, as long as you fully charge before you start

I've only got the x50v files ;(
