Are you running a wireless router? The model you have has built in wifi, and is very easy to connect. You can push the button on the side and then again within 5 seconds, and it will automatically connect to the nearest wireless. Or you can tap the icon at the bottom and right of the screen which will open it up to connect. Once you are in the wifi area, you can scan for hotspots and configure them for password or not, choose which to connect to and other things. Best way is to play with it or read the instructions.

I am a new axim user. I can enable the wireless by tapping the button as you suggest. My problem is I cannot connect when I try IE or email. The message comes up that I cannot connect and I need to click on the Settings, which I do. What next? I can't make any sense of the options presented.
I need step-by-step guidance to properly set up my connections. I have the X51V and an X50 with a D-Link DCF-650W card. I get the same note on both, and I am frustrated by the limited guidance available. Can you tell me the exact, step-by-step process for correctly setting up my connections? I am not a dum-dum, but I do not understand the lingo. So, please keep it simple so I can finally get the X51V working on the wireless internet.
Thanks,
Bob

Hey Bob, in the settings you see a whole heap of network adapters, select dell axim X51 wlan wireless adapter, select my network card connects to the internet in the drop down menu. tap on it and select use server assigned IP address.
Usually when you start the wifi, it scans for available access points, and displays a list of points you can connect to, secure or open. your router should appear in that list. Select it and choose connect. if it is secure, you will have to enter an encrypted key to connect to it. It should be simple. The thing to be aware of though, is that the router should be transmitting 802.11b, if it is transmitting g you will connect but have no connection. Hope this helps a bit

Pedah,
Thanks for your reply. I did as you recommended, but when I tried to open up IE, the same goofy message window popped open again to inform me that it "Cannot Connect." It tells me it "Cannot connect with the current settings. To change your settings, tap Settings." When I do that, I open up this useless (to me) menu for two ISP choices. Under the first choice - My ISP name, I can select 1) Add A New Modem Connection, 2) Edit My Proxy Server, or 3) Manage Existing Connections. Under the second choice - My ISP, I have ony one choice: Add A New Modem Connection.
To me, it makes sense to open the Manage Existing Connection Options. When I do, I open up a big empty box with two headers: Name and Number. This big empty box is located under the "Modem" tab, which makes no sense since I am trying to use a wireless network adapter. I have two other tabs in this area: General and Proxy Settings.
I open the Proxy Settings and am greeted by two check boxes and a proxy server box with the router name in it. Both check boxes are checked. I click the Advanced box and open up another big box with two headers: Type and Server. The Type has lines of HTTP, WAP, Secure WAP, and Socks. The only lines populated under the Server are HTTP with the router name followed by "80" and Socks with the router name followed by 1080.
NONE of this information means anything to me as a newbie. Hopefully, someone can decipher it and explain the exact steps required to set this poor Axim up on the Internet.
It was mentioned above that the router ought to be transmitting in "b" but it might be "g." How do I check that from the computer?
Thanks,
Bob

Ok Bob, now I really think that it's the router, that's the problem. You should from your PC be able to get into a control panel for the router, that is usually by inputting an address into the browser, usually a string like 123.123.123.123, the numerical information for an URL, I.P.address. You will have to get this address and usually a password as well, to get into the routers control panel and check or change the settings. It should be in the routers manual, but the password would have been set by who ever installed the router, if it wasn't you. The router should transmit in 802.11b or mixed mode, 802.11b/g but not g alone

Pedah,
I'll follow up on the router address data.
Given the post above where I discuss the message my Axim gives me when I try to log on, where do I enter the router information once I have it? Please be as specific as you can because I really don't follow the logic of setting up network access.
I can discuss lots of other things, but networking manuals and directions must be written in some alien language as far as I can tell.
Thanks,
Bob

Ok Bob, all of the router stuff can be done from your PC. Forget the axim for this operation. Once you have verified that the router is right, then we'll get to the axim.
So what you will do is open your preferred browser and into the address bar, input the numerical IP address for the router.
This should take you to a login page, remember what you are looking at here is firmware, which controls the router hardware.
Now all of these vary, depending on the router brand, but what you are looking for is what frequency the router is transmitting. It will take a bit of searching through the interface on your part, and I suggest you look at a manual before you do it. The router needs to be transmitting 802.11b, or mixed mode 802.11b/g. either should work with the axim.
Once you verify the signal is correct, try the axim again. It should work. Considering your previous post, the settings you mentioned, it sounds like the axim doesn't know it's connected via wifi, and that is what makes me think it's the router.

Have you actually turn the Wifi on on your Axim.
Tapping the button as you put it only turns on or off the last one that was used, the hardware button works for both Wifi and BT.
When you have it "turned on" do you get a Green flashing LED on the top of the Ax or is it Blue.
If it is Blue you have turned on Bluetooth.
If it is Green it is Wifi.
You can get to the on off button several ways.
One way, Start/Settings/Connections/Dell WLAN Utility
On the front page of that is a big button that says Turn On or Turn Off.
That button should be saying Turn Off and the Green light should be flashing.
If they aren't like that, you don't have the wifi on and it will tell you you "can't connect with the current settings".

F.Tifino,
Yes. In addition to the radio tower symbol at the top of the screen, I have the green light flashing. It's all pretty frustrating: the thing ought to connect, but it does not. I have yet to resolve Pedah's latest suggestion due to the IP address not being acknowledged when I enter it into the browser address bar.
Thanks,
Bob
