Lost with GPS...
Just received new CF GPS receiver. Not much to it. Using with MS S&T. Followed instructions on inserting it. On all COM ports receive error.... "The communications (COM) port is available, but no signal is being received. Make sure the GPS receiver is turned on and connected to the correct port."
The only port that make the connectivity light light up on the GPS is COM 5.
The manual discusses makin sure the COM port is at 4800, yet I'm not sure how to confirm that.
Anyone using GPS and know how to confirm the settings?
Signed,

Welcome to aximusers.com.
I think we need a little more info on this before even starting to answer.
1) What Axim do you have
2) What Operating system do you have on your axim ( and ROM number)
2)What Cf GPS receiver
3) What Navigation software are you using
With out this info, it will be impossible to assist.

Sorry, I'm new to this portable stuff.
Axim X5
Pocket PC 4.320.1081(build 13100)
ROM ver. A05(07170300EN)
Streets & Trips 2005
No name GPS receiver: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...RFB%3AIID&rd=1
(I can't get out to eBay US because of firewall so I skirt it by hitting the UK site)
Let me know if you need anything else. AND, thanks for the assist!

DRIFTER....
I finally found the drivers and the CF is seeing the Axim however, it doesn't seem to be syncing up. It loaded mrgps viewer. Is there a better piece of software to use for this?
Thanks again.

Unfortunately, the viewer is tied to the software so you must use your nav software as a complet package,
I don't know the software you mention as I am a TomTom fan myself.

Fixed it....
It appears that the only thing it needed was time. While the manual stated 15-20 minutes for syncing with sats, it took more like 1.5 hours. All synced up now. Loaded new S&T maps. So far, all is good.
Thanks for your help.

I was just about to type wait an hour or so. I have one of these GPS receivers and it was working fine until I fitted the external aerial to it. Now, despite re-setting via the reset button, it will only work with the external aerial. Presumably the reset button does not work.

WOW, 1.5 hours to get a fix !!!!!
Any new GPS unit I've ever had took a max of 5 mins to get a fix. 1.5 hours seems a very long time to me . Doesn't this make the set up unuseable in real life ???. If you switch off in one ;location and move to another more than say 50 miles away, the GPS receiver has to get a new fix.. Wait 1.5 hrs each time ????
Are you sure you were getting a good signal and that it was not being reduced by trees or buildings ??

I think it is more a case of these GPS receivers being of a rather poor quality as the Pretec one, that I also have, takes less than 5 minutes from cold.
