    X5 SDIO Query

Okay, so i just purchased an AXIM X5, and i know the X5s sd expansion slot is simply for memory and not SDIO. And that the IO of data goes thru the CompactFlash expansion slot. My theory is, ive found an SD to CompactFlash Adapter thats readily available. If i were to get it would i be able to use the CompactFlash adapted SD slot for SDIO, i.e. SD Bluetooth, SD GPS, and SD WIFI??? Id really like to see what we can come up with, just seems a lil much to have to carry 5 different CompactFlash adapters. Some can be rather bulky. easier to carry a few little chips, hell i could put that on my keychain! Lemme know if anyone has had an experience or knowledge on the subject. All help is appreciated.

P.S. - Been reading up on the WM2003 update, not sure what to do yet, guess ill play with it some before i go getting crazy.

    Thanks!

For all of your questions yes you are on the right track. The CF adapter will allow your SDIO card to be enabled. As for the amount of adapters you will have to carry, that's up to you, you probably need to prioritise which services you will use most and stick to those for starters. Don't overcomplicate it, get to know the device standard and slowly add to it. Not being condescending but baby steps is a good approach, work out what you really want to use the device for and work towards that. If you go all gungho, you are likely to encounter problems, software conflicts etc. Welcome to the site

    sweet!

thanks! Not condescending at all, im new to the whole pda experience so i definitely appreciate the help from a seasoned user. so just to reiterate, it will enable an SDIO slot? its not so much that i dont want to use the cf expansion accessories that are out there, just seems so bulky hanging ontop of this thing. and id primarily just use the gps and wifi sds. gps is too expensive thru my phone service provider, just screams why not, ya know. plus it would allow me to dedicate the built in sd slot for memory; apps, games, music, yada yada. makes me wonder tho if it would be better to have
WM2003 for better compatibility with such cards and adapters. Have any insight into such matters?

    Thanks again!

It is recommended that you upgrade to the latest ROM/OS version, and yes you will find more things compatible with WM2003. The WM2003 update AO5 was only available via CD though. I don't know if they can still be found. The Rom before that AO4, is still available at Dells site. As for your IO question. The CF adapter with an SDIO wifi or GPS card should be fine. Really all that's happening there is a stepped way to access the same functions, but again check compatability before any purchase. Also make sure you are getting the cards with their driver disks included, some times accessories as old as these, have been superseded, and support has been withdrawn. Making for long searches to find compatible drivers.

    Good to know

Awesome! thanks again! as far as the WM2003 upgrade is concerned, do you have any pointers tips or tricks? ive been reading the threads on here and it seems pretty straightforward. however, technology and i sometimes dont see eye to eye, ya know. Back to the CF-SDIO quereum, seems like it may just be easier to use the CF options for the sole fact that the compatibility will be more straightforward and there would theoretically be less load on the system for the number of programs/drivers running at once just for one service; CF to SDIO plus wireless card plus internet explorer compared to CF=WIFI. so my next questions are do you have any suggestions for converting audio to a smaller size so that i would be able to put more music on less space; file formats, programs to use? Also curious about the memory in the pda. Are there user replaceable memory sticks/cards? ive opened up a laptop and put memory in, just wondering if the same concept applies or if thats just what the sd slot is for... Great freakin forum btw!!

    Thanks

The rom upgrade is pretty straight forward, connect the ax to your PC, get it syncing, run the .exe from the PC. Make sure the ax is on mains power and fully charged. Once the update is running, don' disturb the ax. Updating is the equivalent of a hard reset. Puts the ax back to factory settings. As for cf or SD

Edit: Memory is not replaceable, or upgradeable without specialised equipment, microsoldering etc. Expansion for storage is through the CF and SD slots. Audio file formats, I always use MP3, best compromise between size and sound quality
