Roaming issues...
Hi all!
I have a problem with a couple of Axims at my job (X51v model) …
Connecting it to the wireless net works fine, but I have problems when I move around in the building. We have quite a lot of access points, but the Axim seems to “stick” to one of them and does not want to roam to the next AP when signal is week or lost. So I have to manually reconnect every time I move a couple of meters. I use the Odyssey client to connect as we have WPA security.
I have been talking to Dell PDA-support quite a number of times about this issue, but they always tell me to contact the vendor of the AP:s (Cisco Aironet 1200). At first to remove “quality of service” but when I told them I didn’t have that configured at all they told me to contact Cisco anyway… Most other hardware works fine in this wireless environment works fine (HP Ipaq, Intermec 700c PPC and ordinary Laptop computers…). Can’t see that there should be a problem there… This is extremely frustrating as we can’t use the Axims as intended…
Does anybody have any idea what to do to help me?
Hope I posted this message in the right forum...
Thanks!

Sorry for the slow response, Socket's WiFi Companion software claims to jump APs for roaming. You can download a trial to see if it works for you. Please post back the result if you do.

No luck...
Tried Socket's WiFi Companion software with no luck. Could not get LEAP to work with it. Also it seemd to use Odyssey to connect and somehow I got the feeling Odyssey is part of the problem... (strange as Odyssey has allways been the trick to fix problems in out environment..) I get the feeling that its Odyssey that gets stuck to a specific AP though WLAN utility can see that the mac of the AP has changed.... This is the only device that has Windows mobile 5.0 in this environmet, Odyssey and Windows Mobile 2003 works perfectly. I acctually do not know where to start... Has anybody seen any updates for odyssey? I have acctually not seen any version of the software that works with WM5.0 appart from the software distributed by Dell... Could this be the problem??? Its kind of fun that one of the guys higher up in Dells organisation says they have te same problem at there office (same brand of APs) while Dell support tells me there is no real problem as the problem is all in our network...
Have you got roaming working with WM 5.0? Any new Odyssey for WM 5.0?
If anybody has any idears I am grateful.
Thank
Rampe

I've seen problems with some APs that require a ROM update on the AP to get the Axim to connect. Have you checked the AP ROM versions? It ends up being a problem on the AP side if this is the case. Just an idea...

Rampe-
Dell recently released a wifi chipset driver update that claims to address your exact problem. See this article for more information.
