I seem to remember reading in the manual that the Activesync connection to the laptop/PC gives internet access via the USB link, exactly as you've proved. Me, I've *never* managed to make my machine connect in *any* free hotspot. At home, wireless internet is fine. In a French hotel once I paid a ludicrous €4.50 for an hour and that worked. Everywhere else, zip.
However, now that I'm on a cooked ROM 6.1 I need to fire up the wireless (green light flashing), then Odyssey, which has all the firewall settings programmed in, and finally my web browser. It takes a bit of effort, not a simple switch-on-and-go, but it works.
And a final note. My machine used to take ages to boot until I read that the probable culprit was Odyssey. I made sure that I switched it off explicitly after every web session and sure enough normal boot times resumed.
