Ok, here's an idea. If the machine genuinely is a brick, then you'll lose nothing.
Download the Football WM6 A03 ROM (look for the thread in the forum) and try to install it. You need a storage card - I can't remember off the top of my head if it's a CF or SD, but the thread will tell you. The card doesn't need to be empty - just add the ROM files to the card and the machine will find them and ignore anything else on the card. It can be a bit tricky trying to hold down 3 buttons at once, but lots of us have done it and found that it's generally a good thing.
Good luck with it. If your Axim genuinely is broken, I'd agree that it's pretty bad luck... always happens just out of warranty...
