It certainly sounds like a hardware problem if, after a hard reset, the alignment problem persisted. The repair you linked to is really for an X5- different hardware than the X3.
You should first remove any screen protector and make sure there isn't any dirt between the chassis and the screen. If it's clean, you should get a new digitizer.
