I had a friend that had a pixel go out
on the ppc-6700 right in the middle of the screen. Upon trying to reset the
device - it got stuck at the alignment screen with no way out.

The skinney is - The file that runs the alignment screen is called welcome.exe
If you can figure out how to remove the file welcome.ink which is in the start up fold [ you will need to active sync and explore the device to get to the windows folder ], then reboot - no alignment screen should come up.

The problem I found is - the welcome.ink & welcome.exe are ROM files -
so they are protected . Good luck, but if you find a way to delete ONLY the welcome.ink file NOT the welcome.exe - you should be good to go.

BEFORE TOUCH SCREEN DIGITIZER FAILS
1) - Run Mobile Screen Align on the machine. Then after a subsequent hard boot run Mobile Screen Align again to reload the alignment file even without a working digitizer/touch screen.

If you have access to the same model somewhere else and didn't capture the data before failure, capture the alignment data using Mobile Screen Align and move the alignment file over to your crippled machine. (Codefactory web site has alignment files for many popular PDA's.
PLUS
Even without having run before failure or a having a file from another machine, Mobile Screen Align will still take one beyond the Welcome/Alignment infinite loop by clicking SKIP.

2) Get around Alignment loop if Digitizer isn't working by navigating to the Windows folder on the PPC. Delete WELCOME.EXE. Softreboot. (When I try to do this, access is denied - your mileage may vary).

3) Add Microsofts Remote Desktop utility to enable you to move the cursor using your PC and show PPC screen on the PC. (Also see 4). Screen refresh may take a few seconds each time which is frustrating. (RemoteDSP.EXE Program installs CERDISP.EXE on Pocket PC, which needs to be triggered on the PocketPC to work.

If cursor not working...
Put CERDISP.EXE on Start Menu. Set a button to trigger Start Menu. Then run CERDISP even if the screen doesn't respond to clicks anymore).

4) Use the fatter version of Remote Desktop which installs itself automagically on the PocketPC when the PC's Remote Desktop program is triggered .

This doesn't allow you to bypass the alignment loop after a hard start. But it is very useful to set up your buttons for maximum continued usefulness of the PDA. (It installs CERDISP2.EXE)

5) Install a soft cursor (Pen Irazu) which uses button controls to move and click a PDA software cursor.
Since it temporarily overrides page up and down controls until the cursor reaches the screen top/bottom, add a shortcut to the cursor EXE to a button (I use IE Button 4 HOLD) to toggle the cursor on/off.

6) Consider Transcreatives Remote Desktop Utility for PC mouse/keyboard control of your PDA. The PDA screen doesn't appear on the PC but PC mouse/keyboard movements are much faster than with the MS Remote Desktop.

(Partway through the install you are given the choice to load a 14 day trial of many Transcreative useful utilities. If you stop at this point before loading the extras, the remote desktop program still works).

Start on the PC then on the PPC select REMOTE KEYBOARD from the input device choices (IE BLOCK RECOGNIZER, KEYBOARD, LETTER RECOGNIZER, REMOTE KEYBOARD, etc). A problem if you haven't cursor control. Slick if 3) or 4) or if a button is remapped to Input Device.

7) A restore doesn't work if the Regional settings are different than what was on the PC when the backup was done. IE Changing language from US English to Canadian English generates error message during restore unless PDA has default language changed before the restore attempt.
