Birthday alarm blues

I'm new to the axim 51v and am having trouble with recurring items on my Outlook Calendar - birthdays in particular. The alarm goes off at midnight, which is not the time I normally want to buy that card or send that email. How can I set up recurring items and choose a more useful alarm time?
