I don't know if you ever solved your issues, but I find Pocket Breeze is what really makes the Today Scren useful - it shows appointments and tasks exactly like you want.

As for Windows Media player.... it sucks. I couldn't make it play MP3s reliably for crying out loud.... it handles movies OK though. Are your files encoded for a pocketpc screen? You might need special software to do that - pocket DVD is what I use...
