I would try a hard reset.
Remove any CF card and press in and hold the side toggle switch, contacts button, power and reset. Release reset and power, but continue to hold the toggle and contacts.
This will loose all data in the X5, but force a total reset and test. At the end of the testing, after led flashing and when it continues to make sound, press reset.
Try active sync again after this. Hopefully, it will work now
