The best way that I can describe this software is “it’s like watching a weather forecast on the news with out the presence of the often annoying meteorologist”. The program allows you view NOAA Doppler radar images directly on your Pocket PC while you are connected to the internet via the various ways available i.e. Activesync, Wi-Fi etc.
When the program is first run, the user is presented with a map showing all 50 states and Puerto Rico. With the stylus, the user then selects a blue “dot” (the blue “dot” signifies major cities throughout the US) that is the closest to their current location or the location they would like to view.
Once the user has selected the location they wish to view, a detailed image of the area is loaded. The user can then select what radar image/type they would like to observe. The usual options for radar (Rainfall / Composite Reflectivity / Base Reflectivity) are available in both long and short range. The maps are amazingly clear and look exactly like what you would see on the local news. The reason for this is that the information gathered by Storm Chaser is retrieved from TV stations. The TV station acts as a server of sorts for information provided by the NOAA Doppler radar network…
The interface is simple and intuitive and the program has some nice features such as “Auto Update” that refreshes the radar map currently being viewed at five-minute intervals. Two functions that I would have included in the program would be a radar loop feature "so that you could see movement and directional headings" and a simple forecast thrown in for good measure.
Over all, a decent offering... Download the trial to see if this would be a tool or toy you would like to have in your Axim "chest".
